🌟 What’s the real impact of bringing interns into our workplace? 🌟 As I start this Monday, it’s a bit odd not having Thomas Hall around after he completed his final day with us on Friday. Interns bring fresh perspectives and energy to our teams, and they also offer us valuable lessons in leadership and mentorship. From my experience leading Thomas Hall and Harvey Parkes this year, having interns on board teaches us: 💡 Empowerment Through Initiative: Allowing interns to take ownership and make mistakes helps them—and us—grow. It’s all about creating a culture where experimentation and different perspectives are encouraged. 📒 The Art of Delegation: Effective delegation isn’t just about assigning tasks; it’s about guiding and supporting others to build their skills while enhancing our own leadership abilities. 🌱 Mutual Growth: The process of mentoring interns can reveal our own strengths and areas for improvement, making it a truly reciprocal experience. Watching Tom and Harvey evolve from cautious newcomers to confident, proactive team members has been incredibly rewarding. Their openness to feedback and willingness to step out of their comfort zones have shown me just how transformative investing in early talent can be. I’m so proud to see how far they’ve come and deeply thankful for their hard work. While I’m sad to see Thomas Hall move on, I’m excited to see what Harvey Parkes will achieve as he continues with us part-time. I'm also thrilled to be leading Global Learning and Development's FY25 Intern Program. I hope this encourages you to support the most junior members of your team too - you might find that the rewards go both ways! 🚀 #Internship #TeamGrowth #Leadership #Mentorship #FutureLeaders

This week, I had the pleasure of talking with Campbell's summer intern class alongside Rebecca Gardy, IRC and Julia Anderson. Speaking about my own career journey, I shared a few pieces of advice with our interns as they begin to navigate their careers. ◼️ Embrace risks and take "left turns": Career paths are rarely linear. I took several “left turns” in my career. Every “left turn” I’ve taken has been a valuable learning opportunity and chance for growth. Don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone, be bold and take risks! ◼️ Seek out a mentor: Finding a mentor – someone who knows you and your career goals - can be one of the most impactful steps in your professional journey. A mentor can be a great sounding board for career twists and turns. They can offer crucial insights, guidance and connections to help you grow. ◼️ Make it a habit to ask questions: Be curious about how things work, your colleagues and how to make things better. Curiosity breeds curiosity! It was an incredible experience to speak with these bright young professionals - we’re lucky to have them!

I'm a little late but I couldn't let the National Intern Day slip away from me. I absolutely have to highlight Jess LeSueur-Houtz! Lencioni has a philosophy that the best hires are hungry, humble, and smart. Jess is all three of those things. Jess, starts her internship and within two weeks had the entire leadership team raving about her. A leader- to me- is not a title; it is an action and Jess is it. It's rare to meet someone whose name becomes a verb and noun, ie "How can we Jess this thing? Or "how can we get some Jess like energy into this?" Here's how she made an impact over the past few months: 🏆 Hungry: At 7:59am she was asked to edit something by a VP before 9:30am and told it's okay not to do it since it's a last minute ask. She not only got it done way before 9:30am she also had some suggestions how to make it better. 🏆 Humble: There is no task to little for Jess. She is excited to learn and sees every opportunity that way. Our team observed when you give her feedback she lights up and gets excited someone has found a way for her to improve. If you pitch her a project her enthusiasm to take on more work is so big - it's contagious. 🏆 Smart: Multiple times she's taken the initiative to connect the dots for her leadership. She will say, "hey I heard this earlier today do you think that's relevant here?" She's absolutely not afraid to be wrong and would rather ask the question than assume the answer. Congratulations Jess. You up level every project you've touched, every team you've influenced, and our entire team culture. I can't wait for your to start in your new role next week! #nationalinternweek #highpotential #leadership

Awesome session on Skills Based Hiring and Inclusive Hiring with SIM Seattle Chapter and Year Up last night in Fremont at FREMONT MISCHIEF INC with John Nelson Matt Rossmeissl Saben Emmons and Mj Jensen. Key Takeaways from the Panel: 1) Mentorship, mentorship, mentorship: Keola Ohumukini said it best in that the opportunity to be a mentor is a true privilege and mentoring others (especially those who have less advantage) is important for all of us. 2) Generational Change: The power of Year Up really rests with giving students a unique opportunity to experience tech or a more professional career versus retail or other hourly jobs that are accessible without a college degree. When a Year Up student is able to earn that higher income, higher skill job/career with benefits, we are changing the arc of their career and life and likely their parents and their children as well. Investing in and volunteering with Year Up is a tremendous opportunity. 3) Hands-on Education in IT: Both Mj Jensen & Saben Emmons said that they would have loved a program like Year Up to help break into the tech industry. Much of tech is learned on the job with the right attitude and life skills. Both MJ and Saben have built very successful careers with Expedia Group, Amazon, Bezos Academy and City of Kirkland without a college degree. 4) Get more than you give: Inevitably, Year Up interns are able to push the hiring organizations forward through exposure to diversity of thought, youth, and challenging the status quo. If anyone is interested in hosting a Year Up interns or volunteering with Year Up, please contact Carmen M. or Lisa Soboslai or Nina Gerber. Thank you John Nelson Keola Ohumukini and SIM Seattle Chapter for hosting!
