Today, as we observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (#IDDRR), it’s essential to reflect on the lessons learned from both past and present experiences and how we can better prepare to cope with and build resilience against future occurrences. Disasters—whether floods, droughts, heatwaves, or hurricanes—are becoming increasingly severe and frequent, impacting communities worldwide. So, how can those who have been profoundly affected by these devastating events cope with loss and build resilience? In this article, co-authored with saskia werners and published by The Conversation Africa, we analyze why both developed and developing nations continue to struggle in their recovery efforts in the face of extreme events. We posit that the success of recovery efforts lies in balancing short-term relief with a long-term vision. While immediate aid is crucial after a disaster, true resilience hinges on proactive measures that address systemic challenges and empower communities to create a better future. As we reflect on these lessons today, let’s commit to empowering communities, fostering collaboration, and prioritizing sustainable recovery efforts. Together, we can build a more resilient future! 🌿 👉 Read the full article here. https://lnkd.in/ei4U_5Hi #13October #IDDRR ⛈ 🌍

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has urged the Federal Government to significantly increase disaster funding to ensure communities are protected from natural disasters. ALGA said that the current Federal Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) is heavily oversubscribed and needs to be increased by at least $250 million per year. https://hubs.li/Q02tfMJc0 #emergencymanagement #disastermanagement #demc #em #crisis #disasterrecovery #emergencyplanning #incidentmanagement #preparedness

Brand new disaster research from Allison Conroe and the team at GlobalGiving. As you can guess, disasters have increased 10x in frequency and severity since 1960. However, disaster relief has been woefully inequitable. "To create a system that protects people most marginalized and vulnerable to disasters, we need to stop measuring our progress by lives saved alone and start measuring the bigger picture of vulnerability and impact." https://lnkd.in/gx5JYjb3

On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2024, UNDP Myanmar reflects on the urgent need to strengthen community resilience in the face of increasing climate-driven disasters. Typhoon Yagi, which struck in September, brought severe flooding to nine regions across Myanmar, affecting thousands of homes and livelihoods. While the immediate response is crucial, building long-term resilience is key to helping communities withstand future disasters. Through the ENCORE project, we are working closely with local communities to empower them with knowledge, tools, and strengthened infrastructure that supports recovery and preparedness. Find out how we can continue to reduce disaster risks and build more resilient communities. #IDDRR2024

Natural hazards, such as earthquakes, storms, floods, fires, and drought are an ever-present threat to lives and livelihoods all around the world. Since it's nearly impossible to know when these calamities may strike, many vulnerable communities are left unprepared when they occur. While it’s true that USAID responds after emergencies, we also invest globally to prepare communities before emergencies ever happen. This process is known as Disaster Risk Reduction. For decades, USAID has pioneered Disaster Risk Reduction in order to strengthen local, national, and regional capabilities to confront natural disasters through land management, community readiness training, and early warning systems that notify people when weather patterns become hazardous. Countless lives have been saved as a result of these efforts. On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we want to draw attention to the fact that the best time to help mitigate the impacts of a disaster is before it even arrives. We will continue working to support the world’s most vulnerable communities, after, during, and before a disaster strikes. #DRRDay #DisasterRiskReduction Press play to learn more.
