‘Fier op de Hei’ is located in Kerckebosch, at the edge of a residential strip, nestled in a beautiful spot between heathland and forest. The challenge was to create compact living spaces within the landscape, allowing the natural surroundings to shape the outdoor space. The result: seven quadrant houses integrated into the landscape, each designed to offer optimal views. Each housing block comprises three types of quadrant houses. All houses feature a covered veranda as an outdoor space, elevated 60 cm above ground level. Instead of private gardens, the design embraces a shared landscape, where the natural environment seamlessly flows between the houses. The surrounding landscape enters the plot: forest from the south and heathland from the north. Two baked-brick roads traverse the site, transforming into footpaths as they enter the forest. Parking areas are discreetly integrated using grass stones, and half-paved paths lead residents and visitors from the parking areas to the houses. Bicycle stands, thoughtfully designed to blend with the landscape, are placed at the beginning of each path. The vegetation consists of native species, harmonizing with the area’s natural character. Pine, birch, wild apple, junipers, ferns, and grasses enhance biodiversity, while rainwater is allowed to infiltrate directly into the soil, promoting sustainability. The overall design creates a serene and natural atmosphere. LOOSvanVLIET was responsible for both the urban and landscape plans. In collaboration with: MIX architectuur B.V. Designed by Breathe Architecture, this eight-storey mixed-use project will feature 44 apartments and two retail spaces, with sustainability at its core. The fossil-fuel-free design includes rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting, a dedicated bicycle hub, EV charging stations, and a lush fern garden. A three-storey brick podium reflects Fitzroy’s heritage, blending seamlessly with the area’s Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes. A retained bluestone wall and laneway on Rose Street will create unique entry points for vehicles and cyclists. BEULAH’s vision for Fitzroy draws on its vibrant history and eclectic culture. With a focus on enhancing liveability and community, the project aims to honour the suburb’s character while delivering modern, sustainable living spaces. The Interlace - A Vertical Village of Living and Social Spaces, Integrated with the Natural Environment The Interlace represents a radical reinterpretation of contemporary urban living through its innovative design by Ole Scheeren. Departing from traditional isolated tower clusters, this vertical village stacks 31 six-story apartment blocks in a hexagonal arrangement around eight generous courtyards. The design emphasizes horizontal connectivity and community, creating a dramatic topography of terraced gardens and interconnected spaces that foster a strong sense of togetherness while integrating individual privacy. Completed in late 2013, The Interlace spans 170,000m² and offers 1,040 residential units of varying sizes. The hexagonal arrangement of blocks forms a stepped geometry with multi-story openings that allow natural light and air to permeate the courtyards. Each of the eight courtyards has its own distinct character and serves as a central point of orientation, with a primary pedestrian route connecting residents to these communal spaces. Sustainability is a key feature, with extensive roof gardens and landscaped terraces contributing to a 112% green area. The design incorporates passive energy strategies and environmental analysis, earning accolades such as the Universal Design Mark Platinum Award and Green Mark Gold PLUS Award. The project’s efficient use of space and natural elements, along with its focus on community and environmental integration, underscores its contribution to urban sustainability and social cohesion.
