Upcoming APRI webinar ''German-Africa Feminist Development Policy: What's Next?'' In March 2023, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), under the leadership of Minister Svenja Schulze, announced the completion of its new feminist development policy strategy. This strategy aims to promote gender equality in German foreign policy, including humanitarian aid, peace negotiations and climate policy, focusing on the 3Rs: Rights, Resources and Representation. Over the past year, this strategy has provoked mixed reactions. It has also raised important questions: - What concrete actions have been taken since it was announced? - How has it affected feminist development debates in Africa? - How has it affected German-African development cooperation? The APRI-Africa Policy Research Institute invites you to a webinar on July 15, 2024, at 14:00 CET, where we will delve into these questions and more. The experts—Ms Memory Kachambwa, Executive Director of FEMNET - African Women's Development and Communication Network; Prof Josephine Ahikire, professor at Makerere University; Ms Verena Wiesner, Senior Policy Advisor at the BMZ; Ms Hala Alkarib, Regional Director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network; and Ms Barbara Mittelhammer, Independent Policy Analyst and Consultant—will also evaluate the progress, challenges, and future directions of this policy. 💡The informal sector constitutes a significant part of Africa's economy, encompassing over 70% of employment. It is characterized by low wages, productivity, and poor working conditions, particularly impacting women. Despite their crucial role, women face increasing inequality and setbacks in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on gender equality and empowerment. These challenges are amplified in developing countries, including Africa, requiring substantial interventions. The SDGs build on the Millennium Development Goals, aiming for universal and interconnected objectives, especially promoting gender equity and fair representation. The following recommended study examines barriers for women entrepreneurs within a gender-responsive financial system, aiming to enhance their participation and societal benefits. “Enhancing Gender-Responsive Financing in Africa: A Sustainable Development Perspective” By Akolisa Ufodike and Susanna Ally -Chapter 4 Of: “Sustainable Development in Post-Pandemic Africa Effective Strategies for Resource Mobilization” Edited by Fred Olayele and Yiagadeesen Samy

Women’s exclusion from the formal peace processes is an indication of the broad systematic gender inequality in the political, social, and economic spheres. The continued absence of women in peace processes require a re-assessment of the strategies used to promote women’s participation with a view of formulating new approaches to enhance women’s access, ascension, and leadership to formal political and peace building processes. Addressing these inequalities calls for context appropriate policies and data to inform the effectiveness and impact of the various strategic measure put in place. 🕊️The upcoming 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 will mobilize ongoing support and solidarity for improving the situation of women in the region and initiating a shift in approaches to peace, by incorporating women’s leadership and a gender perspective in the Luanda peace process. 🌐To learn more about the Forum, visit https://ow.ly/2eyH50TE3iC
