📣 It’s International Migrants’ Day 2023! To ensure the protection of migrants across borders and safeguard migrants´ rights, key anti-trafficking actors from Ethiopia 🇪🇹, Djibouti 🇩🇯, Kenya 🇰🇪 and Uganda 🇺🇬 came together in a regional forum to join forces. They agreed to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for international cooperation on investigating and prosecuting human traffickers and smugglers of migrants – an important driver in fighting these crimes. 📃⚖️ They also seek closer collaboration with civil society organisations and other protection services to improve the referral of migrants and survivors of trafficking. 🤝 The regional forum was supported by the Better Migration Management (BMM) programme, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union. To #EndHumanTrafficking, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from the Horn of Africa unite in #Kenya: The 8th Regional Forum of the East and Horn of Africa Anti-Trafficking Network #EHAAT, which includes 116 CSOs from the region, is taking place with its newly appointed lead organisation Freedom Collaborative, Inc., taking over from the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme. Participants identify common challenges, find shared solutions, and pave the way for the coming year to increase collaboration and fill gaps in the provision of protection and care services to migrants and survivors of trafficking, especially off the beaten track. 🌟 It's Day 2 of the Kick-off Workshop in Valletta, Malta! Organized by the Prague Process and European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA, with leadership from the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania for the Thematic Component 4, we're focusing on strengthening capacities on asylum and international protection. Participants from the Prague Process participating states, along with experts from the EUAA, UNHCR, and Frontex, gathered to discuss the current state of play in asylum and international protection across the Prague Process region and address the priority needs. ✒ Key Highlights: - Discussion on the Emergency and Operational Response Framework, including contingency planning and crisis response in the Western Balkans. - In-depth panel on data gathering, analysis, and forecasting in asylum procedures. - Insights into cooperation and asylum capacity building in the Prague Process countries. - Reflections on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and the future of the Common European Asylum System. We appreciate the EUAA for hosting us and their ongoing cooperation with the Prague Process migration dialogue. 🚨 NEW PUBLICATION 🚨 In a new Chatham House and XCEPT research paper, Peter Tinti argues that the city of Agadez, Niger, is not only a key transit hub for migrants but also holds an important position within the Libyan conflict economy. The insecurity resulting from the Libyan conflict has impacted migration through Agadez and, in turn, migrant smuggling has reshaped conflict dynamics along the Libya–Niger border. For European policymakers, Agadez became a focus for policies to reduce migration and in 2015 Niger criminalized the migration economy in Agadez. Peter Tinti shows that criminalization led to new conflict dynamics in northern Niger, including the securitization of border crossings. He argues that a systems analysis can help policymakers better understand cross-border conflict dynamics, including those of Niger's mobility economy. Such analyses will help develop effective & strategic approaches to conflict stabilization. https://lnkd.in/dx8ZruQE
