By working together, they can effectively combat GBVH and create safer workplaces.   Through continuous dialogue, concrete recommendations have been developed to improve GBVH protection. These recommendations focus on: ✔Strengthening reporting and accountability mechanisms. ✔Investing in prevention and response services. ✔Ensuring all stakeholders are held responsible for creating workplaces free from GBVH. 🆕 The European Parliament has just adopted the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. While less ambitious than initially envisioned, it represents a significant step forward. This directive puts accountability on companies in the EU but its effects will particularly assist emerging and developing countries in enhancing their living, working, and environmental standards, while maintaining competitiveness. When implemented as intended, it will help to ensure a level playing field for EU companies, eliminating any competitive advantages gained through lower social or environmental standards "hidden" in their supply chain. When utilizing existing global standards and verification schemes, I anticipate reasonable administrative burden for those companies maintaining high standards. Today's vote coincides with the 11th anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh, a tragedy that claimed 1,134 lives and left 2,500 injured. It is a tragic reminder why accountability is required. I am hopeful that this directive will lead to improved living, working, and environmental conditions globally while giving competitive advantage to those companies promoting high standards. Global Compact Network Bangladesh hosted the 2023 Sustainability Day Symposium, centered on advancing integrity through collective action. At the launch of key reports—"Global Compact Network Bangladesh Annual Report" and "Uniting Against Corruption: Regional Perspectives on Collective Action"—Cristina Ritter from UN Global Compact Network USA highlighted the UN Global Compact's ten principles, spanning human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. Elaborating on the Ten Principles: 1. Support for internationally recognized human rights protection. 2. Commitment to non-complicity in human rights abuses. 3. Advocacy for freedom of association and collective bargaining rights. 4. Endorsement of the elimination of forced labor. 5. Drive for the effective abolition of child labor. 6. Efforts to eradicate employment and occupation-based discrimination. 7. Backing a precautionary approach to environmental challenges. 8. Taking initiatives for enhanced Taking initiatives for enhanced environmental responsibility. 9. Promotion of eco-friendly technology development and diffusion. 10. Zero-tolerance policy against corruption, including bribery and extortion. The pivotal panel discussed "Linking Business Integrity & Sustainability: The Added Value of Collective Action." Industry leaders emphasized collaborative anti-corruption efforts, highlighting the interconnectedness of industries' supply chain integrity. Kazi Inam highlighted how one industry's lack of integrity could jeopardize others. Additionally, Afreen Huda underscored the dire consequences of lacking business integrity, emphasizing the potential negative repercussions. Moreover, the conversation stressed implementing measurable goals and robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) parameters. Farhana Islam Teresa emphasized their pivotal role in fostering ethical business landscapes and ensuring sustainable practices. Assessments have been a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance safety and promote better jobs and a better environment in apparel production facilities. As part of the INSTEP program, IDH has developed the Industrial Park Sustainability Assessment (IPSA) to evaluate the social, environmental, and building safety baselines of industrial Parks and factories. These assessments help identify best practices and areas needing improvement. We have officially launched IPSA in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Vietnam. The next steps involve the development and implementation of Collective Improvement Plans at the assessed units to improve their performance. By evaluating and improving the social, environmental, and building safety standards of Industrial Parks, we aim to elevate sustainable production practices in the textile and apparel industry. INSTEP plans to conduct assessments for about 15 industrial parks and factories across the three countries this year. "Impact Study on Climate Action Training" Project 🌿 We are thrilled to announce that ERI is currently working with GiZ and 25 factories to conduct an "Impact Study on Climate Action Training" under the esteemed GIZ FABRIC initiative! 🌍✨ This pivotal project, developed in collaboration with the private sector and the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, aims to foster a fairer and greener textile industry in Asia. Our focus will be on assessing the content application and impact of the Climate Action Training (CAT) on the supply chain in Bangladesh. Key objectives include: ✅ Improving suppliers’ abilities to carry out GHG accounting. ✅ Identifying measures to reduce emissions. ✅ Gaining insights into general trends, main bottlenecks, and future plans in decarbonization among small, medium-sized, and large suppliers in Bangladesh.
