Our plan to tackle plastic waste in India. 🗑️ We’ve worked with leading Indian and Australian partners to produce the 'National Circular Economy Roadmap for Reducing Plastic Waste in India'. A circular economy will avoid plastic waste, encourage re-use, and prevent pollution. The roadmap lays out seven strategies, developed with partners TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, CSIR- National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Development Alternatives, UNSW and University of Technology Sydney in conjunction with industry, government and community. From design that minimises waste to developing infrastructure and sustainable practices, we're taking a collaborative approach to the global issue of plastic waste. Plastic pollution knows no bounds, infiltrating even the most remote corners of our planet. Microplastics, the silent menace born from larger plastic degradation, are quietly invading the Himalayan mountains. Nestled within glacial deposits, these microplastics pose a significant threat as they seep into major river systems like the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra, leading to widespread soil/water pollution as well as the endangerment of downstream communities.🚨 But amidst these challenges, there is hope. Solutions that offer a path forward. And GreenPlast practices all of these! -Adequate resource allocation and infrastructure development are crucial. From 1999 to 2019, over the course of nearly 20 years, we imported an average of 70,000 thousand metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, totaling a staggering 1,400,000 thousand metric tonnes. “Mera Ghar to saaf hai na Desh Ka mujhe pata nahin” The fate of this colossal amount is deeply concerning - some of it underwent processing, but the exact proportion remains elusive, leaving us uncertain about how much has ended up polluting our precious oceans, seas, and landfills. The scale of the challenge demands urgent and comprehensive solutions. I recently came across an intriguing aspect of sustainability that has prompted me to reflect on the concept of "plastic neutrality" and its implications on a global scale. The growing concern about plastic pollution has led companies to adopt initiatives like "plastic neutrality" to address their plastic footprint. However, it's crucial to delve deeper into what this means, especially in a global context. When a company claims to be "plastic neutral," the focus often centers on its operations within a particular region, complying with the respective environmental regulations and waste management practices. For instance, in India, the company XYZ might be managing its plastic waste according to local laws and pollution control board guidelines. However, the complexity arises when we consider the broader picture. Many companies operate across borders and may engage in the export of plastic waste to other countries, like India, for processing. According to data from the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India imported approximately 91,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste in 2019 for recycling purposes. In a truly comprehensive analysis of a company's plastic neutrality, we must consider both its domestic waste management practices and its involvement in the global waste trade. The figure below illustrates the flow of plastic waste from various countries to India for processing, showcasing the interconnectedness of this issue on a global scale. It's essential to examine where the plastic waste from imports is directed and how it aligns with the brand's sustainability claims. As individuals committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship, let us continue to question and probe into such initiatives. "Reuse, recycle, and reduce the waste for a better future" As per Marico Innovation foundation, India is recycling 30% of 3.4 Millions tones of plastic waste yearly. . The rest of the plastic waste is sent to landfills or aquatic dumps. In India, Plastic consumption has been increased from 900 Kilotons/annum (1990) to 20,898 Kilotons/annum (2021).Major consumption is in Maharashtra (443,724 Metric Tones Per annum).India(26.33 Million tones,2016) is second highest producer of plastic waste after US (34.02 Million tones).India is second most ocean pollutant after Philippines so innovation and recycling of plastic waste plays crucial rule as Plastic waste management rule (2022)to strengthen circular economy. To understand plastic waste and its overwhelming presence in our life, it is imperative to first understand the value chain of the plastic industry. y. In 2019-20, 11.5 million tones of plastic were used in packaging. Plastic is predominantly used in flexible packaging such as food packets and delivery boxes compared to rigid packaging such as kitchen storage containers and personal water bottles. The entire plastic value chain from production to waste disposal severely impacts the local ecologies it surrounds. This impact is wide ranging, and affects communities and ecosystems. As of 2019, 187 countries have taken major steps towards solving the plastic waste crisis by adding plastic to Basel convention. India brought into force on 22nd Sep’1992. India is the fifth-highest generator of plastic waste in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the people to rid India of single-use plastic in his Independence Day speech in 2019. The government also took the initiative by banning single-use plastic items that have low utility but are frequently littered around, such as plastic straws.   The ban aims to curb plastic pollution since single-use plastic harms terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. However, you can still see these items on the streets of Delhi and Mumbai. The reasons are the same, lack of alternative options at a reasonable price. It made us think, is strict regulation the only solution? Regulations are good but we will need to take the collective societal initiatives. What can we do? [1] Can we buy daily groceries from the nearest grocery store instead of getting everything ordered online? This helps reduce plastic packaging. [2] Can we keep our own water bottles instead of buying them wherever we go? [3] Can we use family packs instead of sachets which have higher plastic usage per gm? [4] Can we reduce, reuse, and recycle by becoming a conscious consumer? [5] Can we avoid littering around the wrappers and plastic water bottles? By asking the relevant question we can make conscious decisions to reduce our waste footprints. At least I try to ask these questions to myself daily. Most often the answer is always Yes. A small initiative we have taken at Adeera Pack is to avoid using bottled water and only drink from a glass. Can we encourage more people to do the same thing? The movement starts with small acts.
