Developed strategies to ensure effective #women’s #participation in the 2024 General Elections Today, women-led organizations, in partnership with PNUD Moçambique and UN Women, held a National Consultation to #develop #strategies to promote effective #participation of #women in the 2024 #GeneralElections. The national consultation involved #600 #participants from all provincial capitals in the country, including representatives of electoral management bodies, political parties, media, academia, CSOs and NGOs that promote women's political and electoral rights.   Participants prepared a Joint Declaration of Collective Action, with measures to be implemented to contribute to the effective participation of women in elections. Among these measures are:  1. #Massify national awareness and advocacy campaigns to combat narratives that perpetuate violence against women in elections (VAWE), including discriminatory gender roles and social norms;  2. #Intensify the creation of dialogue platforms between organizations led by women and electoral actors, to share women's demands and priorities throughout the electoral cycle;  We are grateful for the support of the people and governments of #Canada, the #EuropeanUnion, #Norway and #Spain, who helped us achieve this goal.

As Botswana approaches its 13th national elections, it's crucial to reflect on the status of women's political representation. Despite international conventions, policies, and programs advocating for increased female representation, it's imperative to assess our progress. With only 11% of our highest elected positions held by women, we must redefine our standards for effective female representation and understand its significance for our democracy. Let's examine our achievements and initiatives in promoting female political engagement, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5. In the 𝐕𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲, which garnered responses from 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟏 𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬, an impressive 𝟗𝟐.𝟓𝟖% 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐞𝐧 𝐙 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞, reflecting a strong sense of civic duty. Moreover, approximately 72% of respondents anticipate a high youth turnout on Election Day, indicating a high level of enthusiasm and engagement within this demographic. This data suggests that South African Gen Z is poised to significantly impact the political landscape, 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞 and a strong desire to effect change.
