🍖 Hidden within the European cities lies a reality unknown to many: the consumption of smuggled wild meat, or bushmeat, by African diaspora communities. 💶 The diaspora demand for it turns traditional hunting in Central and West Africa into a commercial activity, straining wildlife populations and prompting disease outbreaks. This trade challenges wildlife conservation, and at the same time it serves a purpose for preservation of the cultural identity. 🔎 This investigation by Nyani Quarmyne and Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt explores the adequacy of existing biosurveillance and regulatory measures, together with questions of cultural bias and possible ways forward. A Breakthrough in the Fight Against Illegal Wildlife Trade 🦏 In an unprecedented display of global commitment, financial intelligence units (FIUs) from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States have become the first countries to announce their support for international collaboration to detect and prevent the financial activity that sustains wildlife crime involving flora and fauna. https://bit.ly/3QQrHMs The journey for many non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), and other conservation organizations, has been an uphill battle. ACAMS joined the fight against the illegal wildlife trade in 2020, raising awareness of this typology across our community. We congratulate this historic announcement made in Singapore, which is the result of the efforts of numerous organizations and individuals from around the world. The Statement of Principles for a Multilateral Approach to Combating Illegal Wildlife Trade creates a framework for FIUs to collaborate to share information, recognize patterns, and execute coordinated operations to target the financial flows that fuel this global crime The illegal wildlife trade is a lucrative sector which endangers some of the world's most iconic species, including elephants, rhinos, and pangolins. Thanks to restoration efforts from NFWF grantee Island Conservation, rare Peruvian diving-petrels have returned to nest on Pajaros Uno Island in Chile. These diving-petrels haven’t been seen on the island in decades, but following Island Conservation’s work to remove invasive predators and employ social attraction techniques, these vital seabirds are back! This milestone not only ensures the survival of these birds, but also revitalizes the island’s entire ecosystem. Our Seabirds Program is soliciting proposals to improve populations of focal seabird species and other species like the Peruvian diving petrel through actions that increase survival and reproduction. Kenyan elephants, particularly the African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana), are a significant part of the country's wildlife heritage. They primarily inhabit national parks and reserves such as Amboseli, Tsavo, and the Maasai Mara. These elephants are known for their large size, distinctive tusks, and complex social structures led by matriarchs. Conservation efforts in Kenya have focused on mitigating threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Anti-poaching initiatives, habitat protection, and community engagement have been critical in helping to stabilize and increase elephant populations in recent years. Notable organizations involved include the Kenya Wildlife Service and various international NGOs. Despite these efforts, challenges remain, including illegal ivory trade and the need for sustainable coexistence strategies between elephants and local communities. It's #NationalOwlAwarenessDay! One owl we are particularly aware of is the burrowing owl. The western species of burrowing owl is currently protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a National Bird of Conservation Concern. Burrowing owl populations are decreasing in size due to loss of nesting habitat from increasing human development. But we are on it! Besides information exchange and experience sharing on the legislative frameworks and governance of wildlife protection, and efforts made by the member countries in combating wildlife crimes, the Day 1 of the workshop also highlighted the essentiality to expand collaborations beyond existing stakeholder to include financial institutions, which currently have limited awareness on the linkages (about 26% in South Asian region) between financial transaction and money laundering to wildlife crimes. The monetary value of wildlife contraband increases along its supply chain (to over 500% as it advances from poacher to brokers, exporter to wholesaler and then to the retail market). Wildlife crimes is a transnational, syndicated and a lucrative business that requires a concerted effort both at the national, regional and international level to effectively address the challenges of wildlife trafficking and illegal trade. Therefore, this workshop serve as one of those platform where delegates from the member countries exchange information, share their experiences and best practices that can possibly be replicated to other countries, as well as to work towards better coordination and collaboration to effectively address the transboundary challenges related to wildlife crime and illegal trade.
