A true collaboration, there were four member-organizations of the Owner-Driven Reconstruction Collaborative (ODRC), a resource network based in India, namely i) STS Global (ODRC Secretariat); ii) Hunnarshala Foundation; iii) UNNATI - Organization for Development education ; and iv) Centre for Ecocentric Development and Peoples' Action (CEDAP). Additionally, two district-based NGOs were responsible for social mobilization through recruitment of local staff, namely Shree Swarna Integrated Community Development Center (SSICDC) and Systems Development Service Centre (SDSC), Gorkha. The project covered 42 wards from 2 urban and 6 rural municipalities in Gorkha district for housing reconstruction post the devastating Gorkha earthquake in 2015. We are pleased to collaborate with Sa-Dhan Association in our pursuit to deepen housing financial inclusion in India. Majority of the housing demand in India is at the low-income segment. An RBI appointed Committee on the Development of Housing Finance Securitization Market, in 2019, estimated a housing shortage of 80-100 million units by 2022. Over 90% of this shortage is estimated at the EWS and LIG segments. The housing finance needs of a typical low-income family, building individual homes, range from Rs.1 Lakh to Rs. 10 Lakh and this requirement is largely unserved and underserved by financial service providers. We look forward to address this market need by collaborating with Sa-Dhan and its members. Bridges provide lifelines for millions of people all over the world. Never more so than for the Mubuga-Nyarunyinya community in western Rwanda. During the rainy reason the local Mashyiga river swells to dangerous levels, sweeping away makeshift wooden bridges, cutting people off from vital critical resources such as markets, health centre and school. The result is rural isolation, one of the root causes of poverty. That’s why Buro Happold partners with Bridges to Prosperity, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to constructing bridges in rural communities to reduce poverty and isolation. In May eight Buro Happold volunteers from our European office went to Rwanda to help build a 62-metre suspended bridge spanning the Mashyiga river to provide a safe and reliable crossing for a community of about 9,000 people, linking them to healthcare, education, and economic as well as social opportunities. DAY ONE AT THE NATIONAL HOUSING SYMPOSIUM: A MILESTONE EVENT On the inaugural day of the National Housing Symposium, organized by the Ministry of Lands in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity Malawi , history was made. This event marked the first-ever National Housing Symposium since our country gained independence. The last significant symposium of this kind was an Economic Symposium in 1964, organized by the late Dunduzu Chisiza. During the symposium, I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Paramount Chief Kyungu. He shared valuable insights on the importance of investing in housing for young professionals. This demographic, now entering the workforce in significant numbers, represents a vital segment of the population whose housing needs must be addressed to ensure their stability and productivity. Dr. Kyungu emphasized the need to do things the right way when acquiring land or purchasing a house. As a Real Estate due diligence expert, I connected his advice to the critical practice of due diligence. Doing things correctly from the outset can prevent numerous problems down the line. This resonated deeply, highlighting the significance of thorough research and careful planning in real estate transactions. The importance of due diligence in these processes cannot be overstated, as it is the foundation for secure and sustainable housing development.
