🚨 The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in an estimated 15 million people needing psychosocial support, with millions potentially requiring medical treatment. A very severe problem is that access to mental health services continues to be impeded by stigma, discrimination, and human rights violations. Psychosocial support is extremely important for those, especially children experiencing conflict, displacement, family separation, witnessing atrocities, and other life-threatening events. 📢 It is paramount to raise awareness about the importance of early psychological support and provide information on common signs, symptoms, and reactions to stress and distress. The need for psychological support is greater than ever. 💔 Failure to provide children from Ukraine with proper treatment and adequate support may result in long-lasting effects that can negatively impact not only themselves but also their families and communities. 🧡 🌍 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) recognized Mental health and psychological support as a crucial and lifesaving emergency response. That is why thousands of volunteers and staff members of the National Red Cross Societies have taken part in the Psychosocial First Aid (PFA) training. Effective child protection requires more than just addressing immediate physical safety concerns. It necessitates a comprehensive approach that includes MHPSS to help children cope with trauma, build resilience, and thrive despite their circumstances. By integrating MHPSS into child protection strategies, we can ensure that children survive and develop to their full potential in a supportive environment. The shortage of mental health professionals remains a concern given the rise of issues such as adolescent suicide in the country. The Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA), Jesuit Refugee Service, Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI) and Three2Six call on all stakeholders – Governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals – to unite in strengthening both child protection and MHPSS frameworks. 🆘 Humanitarian crises affect the well-being of the young generation in many different ways. That's why FCA organises psychosocial support for children living in the middle of conflicts. 🇺🇦 "Ukrainian children are currently traumatised by war-related memories: many return in their minds to days and nights spent in bomb shelters and missile strikes," says psychologist Nadiaa Zubareva. Zubareva holds a lesson on psychosocial support in the #Kharkiv region, during which students practice problem-solving skills by drawing. Different animals mean different ways to solve challenges: Dima Horskyi draws a brown owl on paper, which symbolises cooperation and wisdom. Diana Shevchenko, on the other hand, sketches a turtle, which refers to avoiding the problem. In the Kharkiv region, many pupils are still attending remote lessons for the fourth year in a row. First there was the Covid pandemic, then the war started. "They only rarely have the opportunity to meet each other and be together. Arguments arise over toys, pens and books. The children are just not used to each other," says Zubareva. FCA has trained psychologists and teachers in the Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions. Those who participated in the training learned ways they can promote the psychosocial well-being of their own communities. The work has been supported by EU funds. "The children have participated in the activities very enthusiastically. I have already noticed, based on the fourth time, that the children are becoming more open. According to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO), entitled, Mental health of refugees and migrants: risk and protective factors and access to care, there are 5 key themes that can improve refugees & migrants' access to mental health. 2 of the themes are community support and stigma. I have provided YOU with these 2 themes because they are the easiest way YOU can support refugees and migrants in YOUR community.  Community support in essence is a sense of belonging. This could be in school, church, local Boys and Girls club, YMCA, etc. Stigma. There is a lot of stigma associated with being labeled a refugee or migrant.  Experiences of racism and discrimination are consistently associated with adverse mental health outcomes.  Educate children & adults on diversity as our playgrounds, supermarkets, department stores, classrooms, offices and boardrooms become more diverse. https://lnkd.in/dvRS8JjV.

In times of conflict and disaster we can mobilise effectively to support children and young people, the situation in Gaza and our inability to mobilise our aid systems has further compounded the crushing sense of hopelessness so many of us have felt. We know that when we can finally mobilise our support, we need to support the whole family system in order to support the recovery of the most vulnerable children. Within Ukraine, Gaza and the Congo children and young people are enduring horrendous levels of psychological trauma, we know from studies such as Ming et al (2012) that child trauma is positively correlated with reduced life outcomes, higher risk of suicide, substance misuse and psychiatric illness. In order to make a return to psychological safety, children need a safe and attuned wider family system. We know that when we support parents, we can become more effective at supporting the child. Studies by Measham (2010), Sloane (2016) and Lambert (2014) all found significant correlations between maternal distress and trauma levels and psychological functioning within their children. With the advances in systemic working - especially therapeutic parenting programmes and dyadic work, including the wider family in our recovery programmes for traumatised populations is essential.
