3/3 A specific chapter of the report is dedicated to the prevention and detection of cases of human trafficking among displaced people fleeing the war in Ukraine. According to available information, the number of confirmed cases of human trafficking among Ukrainian refugees since the start of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine remains low, which could be a sign of success of the preventive measures taken at an early stage to protect Ukrainian refugees and mitigate the risks of trafficking. At the same time, GRETA highlights that it is difficult to identify victims of human trafficking as they may be reluctant to file complaints given that they are often dependent on their traffickers and exploiters for their work or income. accommodation. GRETA is planning a visit to Ukraine in 2024 to directly assess on the ground the consequences of the war on the fight against human trafficking in Ukraine, including the issue of forced transfers and deportations of Ukrainian children. Prof. Siobhán Mullally Mullally presented her report 'Trafficking in persons, mixed migration and protection at sea' at the UN Human Rights Council. " Ms. Mullally highlighted the critical situation facing #Rohingya refugees, many of whom are at risk from trafficking at sea, including many child refugees. She said that nearly 4,500 Rohingya embarked on perilous sea journeys in 2023, and 569 were reported dead or missing. Compared with a year earlier, the number of people leaving the shore increased by 21 per cent, while the number of dead or missing rose by 63 per cent." The Special Rapporteur highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive regional response and shared responsibility on the part of the international community. The Special Rapporteur highlights the political commitments made by all member States of the #Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime in the eponymous declaration in 2016. However, the continuing absence of a regional mechanism for predictable search and rescue and safe disembarkation has led to varied and ad hoc responses and continuing violations of States’ obligations to prevent trafficking in persons and to assist and protect victims of trafficking. As a multi-pronged war is waged in Myanmar, victims of human trafficking are being displaced alongside citizens and foreign workers. With the escalation of the conflict, crime syndicates running violent scam compounds in the region have fled or been detained, releasing thousands of human trafficking victims into a war zone with no resources and no way to return home. At least 200,000 others, in Myanmar and in other parts of Southeast Asia, remain captive in these compounds where they are forced to deceive and swindle people online, and are subject to torture, sexual exploitation, and even organ trafficking. The scale of this human trafficking crisis is unprecedented and in Myanmar, it is unfolding along with a humanitarian crisis. #Pakistan: the #humanitarian access situation has deteriorated mainly because of the constraints faced by Afghan #refugees in accessing services. Their forced displacement and detention have intensified between June and November 2023, challenging their entitlement to assistance and pushing some to return to areas of #Afghanistan where assistance is even more limited. 📣 It’s International Migrants’ Day 2023! To ensure the protection of migrants across borders and safeguard migrants´ rights, key anti-trafficking actors from Ethiopia 🇪🇹, Djibouti 🇩🇯, Kenya 🇰🇪 and Uganda 🇺🇬 came together in a regional forum to join forces. They agreed to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for international cooperation on investigating and prosecuting human traffickers and smugglers of migrants – an important driver in fighting these crimes. 📃⚖️ They also seek closer collaboration with civil society organisations and other protection services to improve the referral of migrants and survivors of trafficking. 🤝 The regional forum was supported by the Better Migration Management (BMM) programme, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Union. Violence and crime, declining donor support and restrictive government policies are pushing Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh toward a crisis point. More than six years after the Myanmar military perpetrated a ‘textbook case of ethnic cleansing’ against the Rohingya population of northern Rakhine State, killing at least 6,700 and pushing more than 700,000 across the border into Bangladesh, the Rohingya refugees are at their most vulnerable since the crisis began.
