⚖ Making legal aid services available at the Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital One Stop Centre ⚖ Despite the high prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) and violence against children (VAC) in the country, reporting rates are low, and many survivors don’t seek relevant services such as medical, psychological, and legal assistance. 👩⚕️ 👮♀ 👨👩👧 The Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs (MoCLA), GIZ Tanzania projects SAFE and PRoLA, and TAWLA TANZANIA are contributing to GBV and VAC survivor services at the One Stop Centre at the Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital by including legal aid services. Legal assistance can play a crucial role in enabling the survivor to understand their situation, as well as the steps involved when reporting the case and as it moves through the justice system. In addition, the legal service provider can support in following up and staying in touch with the survivor as the case moves from initial reporting through investigation and later to the courts, possibly contributing to higher conviction rates. Stay tuned to learn more about the high-level officiating of the provision of legal aid services at the OSC happening tomorrow! ✨ #AccessToJustice #JusticeForAll #StopStigmaAndDiscriminationAmongGBVVACSurvivors #YourRightMyRight #LegalAidForEveryone

Partner Sarah Richardson delves into the implications of the recent National Audit Office (NAO) report on the Government's management of #LegalAid. Highlighting a critical gap in understanding between the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and practitioners, Sarah emphasises the challenges faced by those delivering crucial public-funded services to people in need. There has been a 40% reduction in the offices offering legal aid between 2012-2013 and 2022-2023. We continue to support legal aid work in areas of law where access to justice is vital to those seeking it, and where fewer and fewer firms are able to afford to provide legal aid advice. Access to Justice and Legal Aid Access to justice is a fundamental right that is often denied to marginalized communities in India. Legal aid and pro bono services play a crucial role in addressing this issue. Role of Legal Aid and Pro Bono Services: 1. Providing legal assistance: Legal aid and pro bono services provide legal assistance to individuals who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. 2. Advocating for the rights of the marginalized: These services advocate for the rights of marginalized communities, challenging discrimination and injustice. 3. Improving access to justice: By providing legal assistance, legal aid and pro bono services can help to improve access to justice for all. Challenges in Providing Legal Aid: 1. Funding: Legal aid programs often face funding challenges, limiting their ability to provide services to all who need them. 2. Lack of awareness: Many people in marginalized communities are not aware of the legal aid services available to them. 3. Quality of services: The quality of legal aid services can vary, and some individuals may receive inadequate representation. To improve access to justice for marginalized communities, it is essential to strengthen legal aid programs, raise awareness of these services, and ensure that the quality of legal assistance is high. #AccessToJustice #LegalAid #ProBono #India

"MoJ continues to lack an understanding of whether those eligible for legal aid can access it, particularly given available data, which suggest that access to legal aid may be worsening." "Demand for criminal and some types of civil legal aid is likely to increase at a time when the market is in a fragile position to respond." "In real terms, civil legal aid fees are now approximately half what they were 28 years ago." New report by UK National Audit Office on civil legal aid, and how savage coalition cuts have proved both damaging to the administration of justice and a false economy, resulting in overall poor value for money. https://lnkd.in/emdfnCdU

Access to legal aid is an important aspect of legal rights which ensures that people with minimal financial means are able to access justice. At the National Legal Aid Service, we believe that legal aid services are not just optional and a favor to the public but are part of the country’s justice system. Access to legal aid ensures that that the poor, marginalized and vulnerable persons are treated equally and fairly within the justice system. We continue to prioritize the legal rights of the marginalized groups with a legal aid scheme that is accessible, transparent and available to everyone. #NLAS #LegalAid #AccessToJustice

Once again, we do not charge any amount or request for any favor for services offered at the National Legal Aid Service. No legal aid provider, agent or staff of #NLAS shall demand, request or receive payments from any person granted legal aid. Any person who demands, requests, solicits or receives payments in relation to services offered by #NLAS commits and offence. Our duty is to serve the marginalized, vulnerable and economically challenged persons who cannot afford legal costs. #NLAS #LegalAid #AccessToJustice

To this end, the key focus of the conference was on how, in practice, stakeholders can work together to ensure the rights of people in contact with the justice system even in the face of challenges like lack of funding, lack of data and lack of trained lawyers. Practitioners and experts from civil society organizations and legal aid authorities shared their experience of implementing legal aid laws and working within the justice system. They shared real strategies that have worked, and those that haven’t covering topics including models of delivering legal aid services, sustainable funding and innovative financing models, measuring the impact of a legal aid representation; improving the quality and effectiveness of legal aid services, legal aid in civil and administrative law matters, and more...” #legalaid #accesstojustice #SDG16 #lawyers #judges
