Extreme weather events aren't just a climate issue—they're a gender issue. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, from harmful cultural practices to limited decision-making power. In Kenya, droughts lead to the resurgence of harmful practices like child marriages and FGM, while floods leave women vulnerable with limited resources. Zimbabwe's renewable energy fund to create entrepreneurship opportunities for women, and Bhutan's gender-focused training to better implement gender equality in climate initiatives are some examples of initiatives from countries that are making some progress in this area. 🌏♀️ Ever wondered how carbon projects help contribute towards women’s equality? With #IWD2024 this week, we’ve been looking at how the carbon projects TEM helps our customers to finance do this. Thanks to our customers for partnering with us on these projects, which deliver measurable benefits to women, people and the planet. 🔷 In FY23, 40% of the carbon credits retired by TEM on behalf of our customers contributed to UN Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) 5 – Gender Equality. 🔷 In FY24 (to date), around 30% of the carbon credits retired by TEM on behalf of our customers contributed to SDG 5 – Gender Equality. One of our upcoming projects, TEM’s Papua New Guinea (PNG) Improved Cookstoves project does this by: 🔷 Providing employment for women in PNG, with the aim of achieving 50% female employment by the end of 2024 🔷 Substantially improving health outcomes for women and young children who are exposed to open flames and harmful toxic smoke 🔷 Decreasing the time required for cooking by up to an hour per day, empowering women to spend time on productive and meaningful activities, such as education or employment 🔷 While also providing environmental benefits such as reducing emissions and decreasing rates of deforestation. This initiative focuses on sustainable food production by improving the efficiency of water and energy use, aiming to enhance food security, promote gender equality, and stimulate economic growth within an environmentally sustainable framework. 🌍 Awards up to $30,000 are on offer for solutions that bolster environmental resilience and economic empowerment.
