DEMYSTIFYING LUCRATIVE PART TIME FASHION INDUSTRY CAREER: "You're so busy doubting yourself while other people are intimidated by your potential." - Jennifer Lawrence! 👏 In this short article I will cover some of the simple steps that will help you get into fashion brand modeling photo shooting. Like most types of photography, it’s all about creating your network and niche. 👍 Step 1: You Have to Start Somewhere ◾ Let’s be honest, no model or agency is going to hire you if you don’t have any modeling or fashion pieces in your portfolio. But if you have potentiality, genuine interest commitment and adaptability that is paramount factor of success.   ◾ You have to start somewhere, so find an experience fashion industry consultant and recruiter who are up for modeling for you and hone your skills practicing with their advertising and modeling agencies.   ◾ When you’re just starting you’ll most likely do a lot of shoots for training and practice, but focus on getting in as much good work as possible and it will pay off down the road. Which will only help in getting you exposure. 👍 👍 Step 2: Start Working with Real Consultant and Recruiters ◾ After working with a consultant/recruiter, you should at least have a handful of shots that you’re happy with, now it’s time to move onto working with some real models and designers. ◾ Under consultant guidance create a profile and post only your best photos. Models, agencies, and publications will post casting calls that you can respond to, and you can even create your own casting calls to look for people in your area. 👍 👍 👍 Step 3: Make it Easy to Find Yourself ◾ After working with a consultant/recruiter, you should at least have a handful of shots that you’re happy with, now it’s time to move onto working with some real models and designers. ◾ Under consultant guidance create a profile and post only your best photos. Models, agencies, and publications will post casting calls that you can respond to, and you can even create your own casting calls to look for people in your area. 👍 👍 👍 👍 Step 4: Don’t Stop Now ◾ Now you have a great portfolio, models and designers that want to work with you, and a social network of people in the industry. ◾ From here you can decided whether to work freelance or submit your portfolio to agencies, publications, designers, studios etc… ◾ No matter what you decided, always keep shooting. A stagnant portfolio isn’t appealing to anyone, so keep adding and growing yours while you grow your network as well.

Would it help if I gave you a checklist on how to prepare for your next brand photography shoot? OK! Here you go... ☑ Brainstorm a list of “concept” image ideas: Use metaphors, how you work with your clients and/or how you make your clients feel. ☑ Brainstorm a list of “personal” image ideas: Define what aspects of your personality, what you like to do in your free time, what lights you up, etc. ☑ Identify other images you need: For the website, social banners, podcast imagery, etc. ☑ Create a mood board with these image ideas ☑ Find a location or two nearby each other for the shoot – not too many or it will be exhausting to pack up and move each time ☑ Choose a location that will allow you a lot of flexibility for different backgrounds and good lighting ☑ Obtain any permissions necessary for the shoot location(s) ☑ Schedule a hair and makeup artist to arrive at least two hours before start time ☑ Source any props needed for concept images ☑ Plan out the “run of show” for the day, deciding which images will be photographed in each space and what will be the most efficient way to shoot so that you get as much variety as possible. ☑ Gather and/or source the outfits for each part of the shoot (5 to 6 outfits for a full-day shoot). ☑ Take the WHOLE DAY OFF – do not schedule anything before or after your session. Believe me, you won’t want to do anything but relax afterward. Oh, and if this all sounds too exhausting, comment below and I'll make sure to spill the beans on how you can do an entire brand photo shoot WITHOUT buying new clothes, hiring a hair and makeup artist or even taking time out of your business.

New Year, New Job I was hired yesterday as one of the Visual Associates for a new store opening up soon in my area. I was a bit surprised. The Area Manager told me that he fought for me because I was the last choice. During the 2nd group interview, his boss preferred someone with previous experience in visual merchandising and posses strong business acumen. It was one or the most intensive interviews I've ever had which included styling test and presentation. The Store Manager and the Visual Supervisor only had one question each. It was the lady boss who asked around 8 questions. I couldn't tell if she's my age bracket because she was wearing a mask via video. I think only the Area Manager looked at my resume before the interview. And no, there's no way they can remember our individual resume. Everyone else is way younger than me in the room. Despite that, I was the only one among the four ladies applying who dressed up appropriately for the interview (even in the 1st interview). I showed up in a braided sweater with scarf and coat paired with skinny jeans (but not too tight) and slip on sneakers. The other 2 applicants are current Visual Merchandisers for another fashion store but they wore very casual outfits including the jacket. The Area Manager also told me that they like how I styled the mannequin but I didn't followed all the directions. I saw it coming but I want to show my own spin. I knew it will take out my points but I gambled how an urban guy would look like if he works at a tech company. And yes, I incorporated storytelling. In fairness, the other applicant with experience dressed up the male mannequin fashionable but it was too casual in my opinion. It was my first time to dress up a mannequin. I was the only one who talked about their products. I did my research. I wasn't able to answer one of the questions perfectly that pertains to visual merchandising. Then I remembered I can give a better suited example but it won't be perfect anyway. I only have little experience in visuals. However, I have background in leadership that they were also looking for. That wasn't discussed during the offer maybe because I came out with strong personality during the interview. I even noticed that the other applicants copied some of my answers. The Area Manager knew that I really want the job because I told him that I applied for another store before but I was denied twice. That was 10 years ago and the interviewers were only store leadership at a department store.

About 300… About 300 stylists i messaged on instagram trying to get assisting opportunities at the time. There was no blueprint and their still isn’t to my knowledge a straightforward way to get into the styling industry. I messaged, double messaged and sometimes triple messaged stylists often those who I felt were further in their journey and doing jobs I felt would be great for my portfolio. About 95% of those stylists I messaged never opened my Dm, opened and ignored my Dm, opened my Dm but responded NO or opened my Dm responsed with an opportunity but ultimately that opportunity never came about. The remaining 5% of stylists gave me an opportunity and it was probably about 5 people if I’m honest at different occasions. PURPOSE - Why I’m telling you this is that there’s someone out there not even related to fashion trying to get on in their field of work but don’t know where to start. Or feeling demoralised because they’ve received so many NO’s My advice to you is keep on keeping on…eventually those NO’s will roll off your back and won’t mean as a much as they do now. You only need one person to give you an opportunity and when they do YOU better take it and squeeze the life out of that opportunity. 📸 One of the best ways for a professional to showcase themselves. ⠀ I know first-hand that content creation is one of the most complex areas when it comes to personal branding. ⠀ When I work with clients I hear fears that are often based on misconceptions around taking photos and recording videos. They are not sure what kind of visuals to post, so more often than not, they choose not to do it at all. ⠀ My top 3 tips for creating authentic PHOTOS to go along with your expert content. ⠀ 1️⃣ Quality and style It would be worthwhile to invest in a photo session with a professional photographer. I highly recommend interviewing several professionals to feel a connection, check prices and confirm what is included in their offerings (Do they charge per hour or per package? Are they able to help you find a location for the shoot? Are they able to guide you in posing? How many edited photos are included in the price? Do they provide all original images?). Prior to a session look for inspirational images on the internet and share them with your photographer. ⠀ 2️⃣ Outfit As a rule of thumb, wear a similar style to what you would put on when you go to an office or a client meeting (smart casual, business casual, a suit). If you are preparing to step up in your career, dress up for that level. Similar idea with makeup: if you don’t normally wear it to work, but decide to engage a professional makeup artist for the shoot, ask for a natural look with no fake eyelashes. No makeup for such photo sessions is absolutely fine. Skin imperfections can be easily edited later. ⠀ 3️⃣ Location and props Ask your photographer if they have a suitable location in mind (office, city, cafe). Some office buildings have beautiful lobbies that could be used for a photoshoot. Do check if they require a special permission, booking or payment before turning up. Remember also to bring your tools and props such as a laptop, notebook, pen, cup of coffee, snacks or anything else that you use in your daily work life. ⠀ Remember, the idea is to look the way you do in life, so that people can easily recognise you in person. ⠀ ⏩ Would you like to know tips for creating videos?
