🚢 Yesterday, 𝟴𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 ago, the first ship sailed through the 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in Belgium's industrial and logistical history. Named after King Albert I, the canal stretches 𝟭𝟮𝟵 kilometers, connecting the Port of Antwerp-Bruges with Liège. 👨🔧 Its construction was a monumental engineering feat, aimed at boosting economic growth and facilitating regional trade and transportation. 𝟭𝟮,𝟬𝟬𝟬 labourers spent 9 years digging to build the canal. ⚓ The Albert Canal has not only played a crucial role in Belgium's economic development but also in reducing road congestion and promoting sustainable transport. By shifting freight from road to waterways, the canal helps decrease traffic congestion and lower greenhouse gas emissions. 📈 Around 𝟯𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 tonnes of goods are currently transported on the canal. According to Chris Danckaerts, managing director at De Vlaamse Waterweg nv, the Albert Canal keeps about 𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝟮𝟱-𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲 truck movements off the road. Furthermore, approximately 𝟰𝟬% of Flemish households drink water that is sourced from the Albert Canal. 💡 Over the years, the canal has undergone several upgrades to accommodate larger vessels, reflecting its ongoing importance in European inland navigation. ➡ For more details, you can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/erChAz3G #IVReu #InlandNavigation #AlbertCanal #Infrastructure #Anniversary #Innovation #Belgium #Logistics #Sustainability #EconomicGrowth #GreenTransport #ModalShift #History
