Scotland has set a legally binding target to hit net zero emissions by 2045, with the government boldly stating, “Our contribution to climate change will end, definitively, within one generation.”   The work happening in the country’s world-famous whiskey industry is a prime example. "Scotch" exports hit a record $6.45 billion-plus in 2022, powering the economy— and consuming an abundance of materials and energy. As one way to offset impact, Scot whiskey makers created a robust secondary market from distillation byproducts. The volumes of would-be waste go mainly to animal feed or applications like biofuels to offset petroleum.   However, many of the initial farms are reaching the end of their first phase of life while the technology has advanced, so projects are underway to replace infrastructure to keep the farms going and maximize power generation.   Therefore, agencies are exploring future resource recovery projects beyond the scope of grit– for instance how to apply circular thinking around designing and refurbishing bridge scrapers, used to facilitate removal of solids from wastewater streams and improve water quality.   #Scotland #WaterConservation #Wastewater #WaterQuality #WaterSustainability   This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. I'm sure that after my last post you have all been on the edge of your seat wondering who won the KiwiRail sustainability award at FRONZ (the Federation of Rail Organization of New Zealand). I can now share it was Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) who ran the most awesome project trialing biomass in their steam tram to replace coal. https://lnkd.in/gT2W3vBH They trialled two products, one with Scion, and have now found a product made from wood waste that works well for them. They are using it in multiple steam engines on site, reducing their coal use by 90%. A great example of how we can retain heritage while minimizing environmental impacts. #heritage #climateaction

Reuse is a climate solution! 🌎 With the devastating recent wildfires in LA and the numerous climate disasters we've witnessed in recent years, it's increasingly clear how badly we need change. Reusable glass bottle (RGB) programs, specifically, "can reduce the impact on global warming by 77% compared to standard recycling". (Ademe, The French Agency for Ecological Transition). The time is now! 🤝

To mark #greatbiggreenweek this week, we’re sharing some of the sustainable initiatives we have implemented to build a greener future! ♻️ Office and Site Recycling – We ensure we recycle and reuse as much of our waste as possible. This includes repurposing materials like sand, clay, sub-soil and topsoil. 🌿 Biomass Boiler – Our biomass boiler is fed with waste wood, making it an eco-friendly and low carbon way to heat our head office. 🌳 Tree Planting – We’re committed to planting 10,000 trees by 2032, and with over 3000 trees already planted, we’re well on our way to beating our target! ☀️ Solar Panels – We’ve installed solar panels on our office roof, allowing us to decrease our reliance on non-renewable power sources. 🔋 Electric Vehicles – Our electric fleet keeps growing, helping us drive greener miles, reducing our carbon footprint even further.
