Today, on Mother Earth Day, Copernicus ECMWF and the World Meteorological Organization launched the European State of the Climate Report: - Europe is currently the fastest-warming continent, with its temperatures rising at twice the global average rate. - In 2023, Europe had the largest wildfire in the world - In 2023, Europe was the continent experiencing the highest number of days with ‘extreme heat stress’ - 2023 was an extremely wet year in Europe, with 7% more precipitation than average over the continent - In 2023, flooding affected approximately 1.6 million people on the continent, with widespread floods in Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Norway and Sweden - In 2023, 33% of European rivers experienced flooding exceeding the ‘high’ flood threshold and 16% exceeding the ‘severe’ flood threshold - In 2023, storms affected 550,000 Europeans - The Alps experienced an alarming acceleration in glacier melt, with a 10% drop in glacier volume over 2022 and 2023

The World Meteorological Organization ("WMO") is a specialised agency of the United Nations. Why does an unelected and unaccountable body get to "promote scientific practices in weather modification research through its activities and through the organization of the scientific conferences or sessions on weather modification"? What are your thoughts? Today we are joining the world to celebrate the #WorldMeteorologicalDay. This day marks, worldwide, the importance of meteorological, climatic and hydrological services for safeguarding lives and property. The World Meteorological Organization defined the theme of the year as “On the frontline of climate action”, a theme based on the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), particularly #SDG13 (#ClimateAction) when it refers to “taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its impacts.”
