For most foster youth in CA, apartment costs are far out of their reach. This is why strong state programs are essential to prevent homelessness among this vulnerable population. Let's advocate maintaining SILP Housing Supplement and the Housing Navigation and Maintenance program in this year's state budget! Together, we can create a more equitable environment where every young person can thrive. Act: https://loom.ly/xwSizCs

How do we define "family"? This is a really interesting model for how generations can come together to support one another, mitigate loneliness, tackle the housing affordability gap, and build "family" and community. At this apartment community near Portland Oregon, seniors become mentors, caregivers, friends, and family to children who have experienced the trauma of being a part of the foster care system. All 3 generations — seniors, foster parents, and the chosen kids these families are caring for come together to build social connections and community with a safety net of support and care. #Intergenerationalrelationships #Multigenerational https://lnkd.in/ecdBKisN

How can we help people stay in the homes they already have? The human costs of evictions are vast, especially for families and communities of color. But even modest investments in eviction diversion can prevent countless harms. Eviction destabilizes life for millions of families each year, most of all in communities that have historically been marginalized. To address that destructive trend, our housing team in Newark takes a three-pronged approach to preventing evictions. Read our latest post on The Arc to find out more: https://bit.ly/3xMMf16

Our Agency opposes the proposed #CABudget cuts to critical services for foster youth. These cuts threaten to reverse positive strides made in recent years to increase stability/permanency for foster kids and prevent homelessness for current and former foster youth. Specifically, we urge our state leaders to safeguard the following programs: Family Urgent Response System, Housing for Foster Youth in Supervised Independent Living Placements, and Housing Navigation and Maintenance Program. #SFHSA #ProtectFURS

The post by Upside raises a compelling point about the need for immediate and innovative solutions to address housing stability, a fundamental social driver of health. There is a significant challenge that I have stated over and over again: the tendency of many stakeholders to rely on traditional methods and long-term policy changes, which often don't meet urgent needs. One of the biggest challenges in housing stability today indeed lies in the inertia of existing systems and the delay in implementing solutions that can have immediate impacts. Many current approaches are often slow-moving and entangled in bureaucratic processes, which can be detrimental to those in need of immediate assistance. Moreover, the economic models used to address housing often fail to account for the hidden costs associated with housing instability, such as increased healthcare expenditures when individuals without stable housing end up in emergency rooms, as highlighted in the post. The call for unconventional thinking—"thinking outside the box"—is essential. Solutions like public-private partnerships could be leveraged to implement technology-driven solutions. Collaborations between health plans, housing authorities, and technology providers could lead to systems that not only identify and prioritize individuals at greatest risk of housing instability but also streamline resource allocation. The urgency and innovative spirit is indeed crucial. It's not just about creating more housing but also about making the systems that support housing more efficient, flexible, and responsive to immediate needs. Engaging all stakeholders—including health plans, could help to share the financial risks and benefits and drive more sustainable solutions. This approach not only addresses the economic considerations but also significantly improves the quality of life for the affected populations, creating a healthier society overall.

According to recent statistics, approximately 589,464 people were experiencing homelessness. The fear of relapsing into homelessness after leaving transitional housing is a common concern for many individuals who have experienced housing instability. Why? ➡Aging-out foster youth may lack stable housing and support. ➡Young adults leaving foster care may face financial challenges. ➡Some individuals aging out of foster care lack essential life skills like budgeting. So, from my experience, you can: ➡Providing extended support services: housing assistance, case management, and counseling. ➡Offering transitional housing programs specifically designed for young adults. ➡Offering comprehensive life skills training programs covering topics such as budgeting, cooking, and job readiness. ➡Educating young adults about their rights as tenants and providing assistance with understanding leases.

A housing strategy for vulnerable young people is a must do in BC.
We are grateful to The Vancouver Sun for publishing this Opinion piece today. We feel strongly and passionately that a strategy to address youth homelessness will change the face of our society. "Without a dedicated youth housing strategy, young people in care are being pulled down a path to homelessness and further into a cycle of life-altering crises — facing issues like problematic substance use, interactions with the criminal justice system, and even losing custody of their own children." - Jacqueline Dupuis and Sarah Stewart Please share this post as we head to the ballot box. https://lnkd.in/gQX4S_KX #HousinginBC #bcPoli #YouthHousing #YouthHousingStrategy #SocialPurposeHousing #BCElection #PRforGood #PRforSocialChange #SocialPurposePR
