📜 What has Canada committed on paper regarding a Canada-Africa strategy? Let's get a lay of the land. Let's start with Prime Minister Trudeau's Mandate Letters to his Cabinet Ministers: ❌ Minister of Foreign Affairs: no mention of Africa... ❌ Minister of International Development: no mention of Africa... ✅ Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development: mandated to develop "a strategy for economic cooperation across Africa, including support for the African Continental Free Trade Area, facilitation of increased infrastructure investment and expansion of partnerships in research and innovation" Each of these Ministers oversee Global Affairs Canada. Let's see what the agency responsible for international engagement has to say on Canada-Africa engagement in its 2023-24 Departmental Plan: 📜 The department will advance a Canada-Africa Economic Cooperation Strategy, including support for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area. 🤝 In 2023-24, Canada will continue to deepen its relationships with countries in Africa and with the African Union. 🤝 Building on the first Canada-African Union Commission High-Level Dialogue in 2022, Canada will institutionalise this partnership to advance shared interests. 📜 In sub-Saharan Africa, the department will continue to strengthen economic and people-to-people ties, including by developing a strategy for economic cooperation across Africa. 🤝 Trade relationships will also be advanced through... engaging in a trade policy dialogue with the African Union as a platform for developing long-term trade policy relations with the continent. Canada has committed to strengthening its engagement in Africa through an economic cooperation strategy. Our commitment may be scattered sparsely throughout GAC's plans, and on the back burner for some of our Ministers, but nevertheless it is there. While our government may not be not shouting it from the rooftops, I certainly will be 🗣 I look forward to engaging with our government representatives to learn more about the progress we've made on our commitments above and explore how the Canadian public and African diaspora can support Canada's increased engagement on the continent.

Migration and trade are closely linked complementary forces. This paper draws attention to the need for a better understanding of the influence of diaspora associations, multinational corporations, and business immigration in the trade-migration nexus.

"The Libyan-Maltese Trade and Export Forum Successfully Held in Malta" "After months of preparation, the Libyan Embassy in Malta, in collaboration with Maltese authorities, organized the Libyan-Maltese Trade and Export Forum. A high-level Libyan delegation, led by the Minister of Economy and Trade and the Minister of Maritime Wealth, attended along with Mr. Soheil Al-Turki, Charge d'Affaires, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Sharif, Consul at the Embassy, in addition to government officials and businessmen." "The forum featured special dialogue sessions discussing ways to enhance trade and investment exchange, with broad participation from both the private and government sectors. Challenges facing companies and investors in both countries were highlighted." "The discussions resulted in practical recommendations emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, demonstrating political will, and encouraging visions to elevate cooperation in various fields, including the signing of memoranda of understanding to enhance trade and investment."

2/2 Quick facts In January 2024, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the Team Canada collaboration strategy to promote and defend Canada's interests not only in the United States, but with the United States. Minister Ng, Minister Champagne and Ambassador Hillman are co-leading this strategy. They carry out promotional activities in Canada and the United States with the aim of strengthening the important economic and diplomatic relations between Canada and the United States. The Canada-United States partnership is forged by common geography, similar values, shared interests, strong people-to-people relationships and powerful, multi-faceted economic ties. Canada and the United States have one of the most important trading relationships in the world, with trade valued at $1.3 trillion in 2022. Every day, more than $3.6 billion worth of goods and services cross the Canada-U.S. border, supporting millions of jobs on both sides of the border and fostering innovative collaborations which strengthen the competitiveness of North America. The Gordie Howe International Bridge, scheduled to open in fall 2025, will facilitate the movement of more goods, people and services between Canada and the United States. TURKEY’S MARKET IS OPEN FOR FOREIGN INVESTMENT Commercial Counsellors from Turkish Chamber of Commerce (Mr. Okur Erdogan and Ms. ilker Eralp) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ms. Reitumetse Ratjeke) paid a courtesy call to LCCI Offices with the purpose to foster Transparent Trade Collaborations and Corporations. The yet to be official MoU between these two parties acutely hopes to address all socio economic and political issues affecting both countries with motive to positively impact their country’s economic growth. Turkey’s trade market is open for Basotho foreign investors, this proves that the Turks support shared approaches and promote global collaboration. On April 17th I had a pleasure to have public discussion on international trade; how to improve our economy; why Estonia prefers multilateral approach in trade; and why are we members of WTO and OECD.
