Speeding remains a significant issue, contributing to nearly a third of motor vehicle fatalities for over two decades, with 29% of traffic fatalities in 2022 involving speeding. Driving too fast for conditions, such as in bad weather or poorly lit areas, endangers everyone on the road. The consequences of speeding include increased crash severity, higher economic costs, and greater fuel consumption. Factors driving speeding include traffic congestion, running late, anonymity, and disregard for others and the law. To address this, NHTSA collaborates with various organizations to implement speed management programs and enforcement measures. The Urgent Need for NHTSA Leadership Safety advocates estimate that at least 50 children die each year in crashes involving a seatback collapse. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of updating vehicle safety standards—a task that falls under NHTSA's purview. “For too long, families have had to worry about the safety of their most precious cargo in their vehicles: children in the back seat,” stated Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts. Despite the passage of over two years since the inclusion of a provision in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law mandating NHTSA to update the standard for seatback safety, the agency has yet to take action." This inaction is not an isolated incident. NHTSA’s track record reveals a pattern of missed deadlines and prolonged investigations, often with grave implications: 💣 ARC Inflator Recall: A decision on the recall of 52 million ARC airbag inflators, which can explode and emit deadly shrapnel, is overdue. With two fatalities and seven injuries already linked to these inflators, NHTSA’s eight-year-long investigation has yet to culminate in a ruling. 💣 Takata Desiccated Inflators: Similarly, the recall of 36 million desiccated Takata inflators remains unresolved. Despite the known risks associated with the defective ammonium nitrate used in these inflators, and two ruptures occurring in 2023, NHTSA has not released any information following over two years of investigation. NHTSA’s inability to meet its own deadlines and enforce regulations raises concerns about its effectiveness in protecting the public. It’s time for NHTSA to appoint confirmed Administrators who can provide the leadership needed to address these urgent safety issues. #automotive #safety #publicsafety #Takata #ARC #airbag #recalls

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and with cell phone use, specifically texting, talking, and social media, a part of our daily lives, distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on our roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA (NHTSA) shares these tips on how to stay safer on the roads: ◾ Need to send a text? Pull over and park your car in a safe location. ◾ Designate your passenger as your “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages. ◾ Do not scroll through apps while driving. Struggling not to text and drive? Put the cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until you arrive at your destination. For startling stats and more tips, visit NHTSA’s website: https://brnw.ch/21wIEzR As Al LaCombe Dupré’s Vice President of Safety and Risk Management reminds us, “Your life is in your hands!” Let’s all aim for safety! #NHTSA #DupréLogistics #Safety #DriveDupré

This year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a campaign "Put the Phone Away or Pay" to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while distracted. Studies show that in 2022, over 3,300 fatalities and nearly 290,000 injuries were reported due to distracted driving crashes. Distracted driving can include texting, eating, or even adjusting entertainment systems. While NHTSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) are actively researching ways to eliminate distractions in vehicles, we must work together to prioritize safe driving and make our roads safer. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA continues to force Tesla to issue "recall" notices to fix issues that are already fixed. Talk about government idiocracy run amok. "Our records indicate that your vehicle is currently running a software version containing the remedy and there is no further action that you need to take." Let's count the number of gob-smackingly asinine issues here, shall we? 1. NHTSA forces Tesla to call over-the-air software updates "recalls". I'm just waiting for the FCC to force Apple to call their iOS updates "recalls" and to make you take your iPhone to the nearest Apple store to get the update applied. 2. NHTSA forces Tesla to mail notice to people who own vehicles where the issue is already fixed. 3. NHTSA forces Tesla to issue paper recall notices, killing trees in the process and creating environmental pollution by having to deliver notices by USPS mail. 4. NHTSA creates excellent fodder for those that believe government has gotten too big, too unwieldy and too brain-dead and that we don't need it. Question for NHTSA: should I return the letter so it can be used for the next "recall"?
