Jim Omel, MD, exemplifies this as a multiple myeloma survivor and advocate for over 25 years. His journey from treating patients to becoming a global voice for multiple myeloma awareness highlights the power of compassion and deep expertise. We are inspired by Dr. Omel's dedication to mentoring future advocates and empowering patients worldwide. His story reminds us that when providers step up as advocates, they can truly make a difference in the lives of patients, advancing both trust and medical innovation. The healthcare system is oftentimes challenging to navigate, especially after receiving a life-changing diagnosis. Patient advocates are pivotal in helping patients and caregivers access the support and education they need to make informed decisions. Director of Patient Advocacy and Education at the Community Oncology Alliance and 20-year cancer survivor, Rose Gerber, MS, shares her insights on becoming a patient advocate and asserts the need for patient involvement early-on: “[W]hat I know from my 20 years of advocacy experience is even though we always hear the phrase, we should be patient-centric, put the patient at the front. Oftentimes the reality is the patient is thought about at the end of the discussion. And they're like oh, we need a patient. We need to get the patient insight. Whatever you're working on, whether it's a research project, a media article, bringing the advocates in at the very beginning because they have a right to be at the table from the very beginning. And they do have incredible insight and incredible knowledge, oftentimes not only just about their disease state but again about the greater health care policy landscape.” Read more of Rose’s insights below: https://lnkd.in/eaQmvnTR #patientcentricity #patientadvocacy

Federal Funding for Cancer Research The Background: Each year Congress must develop and pass appropriations bills to fund the government for the new fiscal year (FY) beginning October 1. Congress was unable to pass its FY 2024 funding bills prior to the deadline. To avoid a government shutdown, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) that keeps the government funded at FY 2023 levels. The current CR for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) goes until March 8, 2024. Congress must now continue to negotiate funding levels for FY 2024, including the NIH, NCI, and ARPA-H. The Senate Appropriations Committee passed an FY 2024 bill that slightly increases funding for these key programs, while the House Subcommittee’s version of the bill contains cuts. Lawmakers need to hear from you on the importance of robust funding for the NIH, NCI, and ARPA-H. The Ask: For FY 2024, ASCO, along with the broader medical and cancer research communities, is asking Congress to support the goals of the NCI’s new National Cancer Plan by providing sustainable, long-term funding for biomedical and cancer research. ASCO urges Congress to pass a FY 2024 spending bill that includes at least: $51 billion for the NIH $9.988 billion for the NCI $1.5 billion dedicated for ARPA-H Why it Matters: ASCO stands ready and eager to work with the NIH, NCI and the entire cancer community to end cancer as we know it, and our funding request for the NIH and NCI is the first step. Discussions around cuts to discretionary funding this year have added pressure on the appropriations process. It’s vital that we continue to highlight the need for robust federal funding for cancer research. Please take a moment to contact your lawmakers.

Federal Funding for Cancer Research The Background: Each year Congress must develop and pass appropriations bills to fund the government for the new fiscal year (FY) beginning October 1. Congress is currently working on the funding bills for FY 2025. The FY24 appropriations package, passed in March 2024, provided some increases for several centers and institutes within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Overall, the bill designated $47.1 billion in funding for all NIH programs, about $378 million less than FY23 levels. For the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the bill increased base funding at $7.2 billion, slightly higher than the FY23 base level. Unfortunately, FY23 was the final year of designated Cancer Moonshot funding, resulting in an overall cut to NCI’s total funding level in FY24. Funding for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) was held level at $1.5 billion. Lawmakers need to hear from you on the importance of robust funding for the NIH, NCI, and ARPA-H in FY 2025. The Ask: For FY 2025, ASCO, along with the broader medical and cancer research communities, asks Congress to support the goals of the NCI’s new National Cancer Plan by providing sustainable, long-term funding for biomedical and cancer research. ASCO urges Congress to pass a FY 2025 spending bill that includes at least: $51.3 billion for the NIH $7.934 billion for the NCI $1.5 billion dedicated for ARPA-H Why it Matters: ASCO stands ready and eager to work with the NIH, NCI and the entire cancer community to end cancer as we know it, and our funding request for the NIH and NCI is the first step. This year, a difficult budget environment coupled with an election year has added pressure on the appropriations process. It’s vital that we continue to highlight the need for robust federal funding for cancer research. Please take a moment to contact your lawmakers.
