"𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐰𝐞'𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬!" Was my response to a Global Mobility Manager, asking whether we could speed up the processing time of our advice. Some years ago, before the "War on Talent", local-hire contracts were introduced. International Talent was willing to relocate across borders, without the extensive benefit packages that our industry was known for. My client had introduced such contract, and thanks to technology and other process improvements, there were only six weeks between international relocation contracts being signed, and the expected contract starting date. So, our advice needed to be issued faster than its usual 10 weeks. We figured it out: our client would get a "Fast-Track" option, and we would get a bit of extra money should people need to work overtime to get it done. That way, everyone benefits! Some years later, it dawned on me. 𝑊𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑤𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑠𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑛 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑦, 𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑖𝑥 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒? Why did I not challenge this process with the Global Mobility Manager? Sure, my client and employer benefited from the solution I implemented, but the family was paying the price. Moving in such a short timeframe happens at the cost of everyone's mental wellbeing, and I don't believe employees involved are truly effective in their new roles while their partner and children are stressing out in their new home. This anecdote comes up every time I conduct a Family Relocation Experience Quickscan with a Global Mobility Team. According to some research, partner or family being unhappy is among the key reasons why expat postings "fail" or staff moves away earlier than expected. Just as you observe at the end of the article. Succesful expatriation is a team effort- both partners need to have their own "why" for supporting the move. Career development support (or even life coaching) for partners can be very helpful, and is a lot less costly than an assignment cut short.
