Travel is one of the most powerful ways to forge cultural connections and understanding. And it's a trend that we have seen take off in recent years. In the heart of this #trend stands the small town of Katanning, Australia, which has recently become a magnet for Asian #tourists thanks to a viral video showcasing its rich Malaysian community. Katanning, a multicultural haven where 50 different languages are spoken, caught the eye of Malaysian YouTuber Saiful Nang. His videos, illuminating the town's welcoming spirit, have captivated nearly 1 million viewers and sparked significant interest from Asian travelers. This surge in tourism to Katanning mirrors a wider embrace of interculturalism in #Australia, a nation where nearly a third of the population is born overseas, and almost half have at least one parent from abroad. Australia's diverse migration story, complemented by one of the world's oldest continuous living #cultures, highlights the power of multicultural representation and shared experiences in building #community. Saiful Nang's storytelling initiative is a testament to how shared travel experiences can deepen our appreciation of Australia's diverse cultural tapestry. This success story illustrates the tremendous impact of cultural exchange in strengthening community bonds and promoting inclusivity. Signal credit Briony Lewis https://lnkd.in/gEDxaFhN

Lost in Translation... and Found in Friendship: Why Small Group Travel is Booming in Asia Imagine this: you're on a whirlwind tour of Southeast Asia. Temples rise from the mist, street food fills the air, and you're following a guide with an umbrella-sized flag, desperately trying to keep your massive tour group in sight. This used to be the picture of Asian travel for many. But something's changed. On a recent trip to Vietnam, I ditched the big bus for a small group adventure. We were just eight of us, led by a local guide who knew the hidden gems. Instead of feeling lost in the crowd, I felt connected - to the places we visited, the people we met, and even my fellow travelers. One evening, we found ourselves huddled around a homestay host, his wife showing us how to make traditional rice paper rolls. Language barriers became laughter as we fumbled with our chopsticks, the air thick with the warmth of shared experience. It was a moment you simply wouldn't get on a giant tour. Here's why small group travel is taking Asia by storm: - Deeper Connections: Smaller groups foster a sense of camaraderie, allowing you to truly connect with your fellow travelers and forge lasting friendships. - Local Gems: With less logistics to manage, small groups can venture off the beaten path, exploring hidden temples and charming villages untouched by mass tourism. - Flexibility: Itineraries can be adapted to suit the group's interests, making the experience more personalized and enriching. - Cultural Immersion: Smaller groups are less disruptive, allowing you to connect with locals on a deeper level and gain a more authentic understanding of the culture. So, ditch the crowds and embrace the intimacy. Asia awaits, with its rich tapestry of cultures and unforgettable experiences, all waiting to be discovered in a smaller, more meaningful way. #travel #asiatrip #smallgrouptravel #adventure #culturalimmersion

Considering a move to Portugal as an expat? 🌍 Portugal's charm, coupled with its diverse regions, offers an array of choices for expatriates. Here’s a quick guide to the best spots where you can thrive as an expat in Portugal. Lisbon 🇵🇹 Lisbon, the vibrant capital, is perfect for those seeking a dynamic city life. Rich in history, culture, and nightlife, it offers a relatively low cost of living compared to other European capitals. It’s home to a large expat community, ensuring you’ll find a supportive network. Porto 🍷 Famed for its port wine, Porto in northern Portugal is a picturesque haven with a laid-back vibe. The cost of living is lower than in Lisbon, and the city's expat community is growing, enabling you to immerse in local activities. The Algarve 🏖️ If beach life appeals to you, the Algarve in southern Portugal is ideal. Known for stunning beaches and clear waters, it’s not just a tourist destination but a fantastic place for outdoor enthusiasts. The expat community is well-established, offering numerous social activities. The Silver Coast 🌅 North of Lisbon, the Silver Coast boasts beautiful beaches and historic towns. Less touristy than the Algarve, it’s perfect for those seeking tranquility while still remaining active with outdoor activities and an evolving expat community. Cascais 🌴 Just a short train ride from Lisbon, Cascais combines historic architecture, beautiful beaches, and a vibrant cultural scene. Though the cost of living is slightly higher, it offers an active expat network and proximity to the capital. Personal anecdote: I remember the thrill of discovering Lisbon’s hidden gems, from its stunning viewpoints to its vibrant local markets. Each region has its unique charm and the expat communities make integration seamless. 🌟 What about you? Have you considered moving to Portugal or are you already enjoying life there? 🇪🇸 I want to address what is happening in Barcelona, and really around the world. I have read article after article identifying the core issue is that housing prices and cost of living have gone up because of tourism. None really proving it, outside of short term examples, but that's not what I'm after here. As someone living in an increasingly xenophobic country, I am sounding the alarm for how people are talking about The Foreigner. 🇫🇷 The Foreigner did not bid for and plan the Paris Olympics. 🇪🇸 The Foreigner did not buy/sell a building in Barcelona to rent on Airbnb. 🇮🇹 The Foreigner did not decide to bring a 3500-person cruise ship to Venice. 🌊 The Foreigner did not green light a new 500-room luxury resort in Maui. However, someone 👏 from 👏 each of these respective cities did... ...and it's tragic that when we can't meaningfully dialogue with our local power-brokers, our instinct is to turn on our fellow humans. I consider active global citizenship critical to the modern Human experience, and hope, in this time of anger and xenophobia, that we find solutions that encourage meaningful international interaction vs. eradicating it. 💵 The Foreigner brings money and creates jobs. 💡 The Foreigner brings new ideas, both academic and cultural. 🗣 The Foreigner shares the beauty of your country with others back home. 📓 The Foreigner learns from your way of life to improve theirs. My entire appeal is to focus less on The Foreigner and more on the question of "What is needed to improve your economic wellbeing?" (And I hope I've made the case that it's not shooting water guns at a couple trying to have dinner.) I'll look to follow this up with posts on thoughtful tourism as well as effective solutions to over-tourism. #hospitality #activeglobalcitizenship #barcelona

International Relations Master's Candidate at IBEI (2022-2024) Communication and international projects.
A thoughtful post on the events taking place around the world regarding the effects of over-tourism in cities and destinations around the world in the peak of the high season. The demonstrations in cities like Barcelona infer that some voices in the tourism ecosystem do not feel heard. Local population groups believe their demands are not being addressed, and express that the solutions and narratives proposed by governments and the industry are not enough. But I wonder, is this anger targeted in the most effective direction? What can actually be achieved by focusing the, nonetheless justified, exasperation towards "the tourist"? What are your thoughts? #sustainabletourism #tourism #demonstrations #overtourism

Unruly Tourists - Pre-departure Etiquette, Interculture Awareness Lessons Borrowing from the corporate training world, where the World Civility Index has been used for companies' internal performance evaluation of employees for close to a decade, with "revenge traveling" after COVID-19, tourist destinations such as Venice, Italy, and Machu Picchu, Peru, are seeing overwhelming tourists, and along with it, unfortunately, came the problem of unruly tourists making loud noises, damaging artifacts, and generally misbehaving, the World Civility Index is seeing new application in the tourism sector! The idea of borrowing the World Civility Index for the tourism industry is to pre-educate aspiring tourists before they depart from home. This allows ample time for changing mindsets, habits and culture. Topics include soft skills such as international social etiquette and protocol, empathy, and intercultural awareness. Participants earn "points" on the World Civility Index as proof to show to destination authorities for preferential entrance admission. The IITTI World Civility Index is an official partner of the UN Sustainable Development, focusing on SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) #8 Decent Work & Economic Growth, and in 2023, was accepted by the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Presencing Institute to help solve world problems. #touristDestination #touristPhobia #overTourism #softSkillsStandard #internationalEtiquette #socialEtiquette #prescreening #predeparture #predepartureOrientation #WorldCivilityIndex #IITTI
