What's the secret you wish you'd known when you were an expat, before you came back ? 🛬 🌏 When you live and work abroad, with the challenges, the joy and the success that come with expat life, it's difficult to project yourself in the future and imagine what it will be like when you will be back home. 😎 There might be an expiration date on your visa, but you live in the present and put this data in a back drawer of your memory. 📆 You might have heard that it's not easy to come back, that the transition is tough, but this info is also packed somewhere remote in your mind. But one day, you will face this reality. Time flies, the day you will leave is coming fast and will be suddenly here. Will you be caught unprepared, like most of your fellow expats (70% of expats don't think about there return) ? Without anticipating and preparing properly, your career will suffer. Will you be part of another somber statistic : 50% of expats leave their jobs within 3 years after their return ? The secret is this: repatriation is hard. It's much harder to return than to depart. One way to address this is to begin with the end in mind, and make sure you don't lose sight of the bigger picture. When your company offered you the opportunity to work abroad, your expatriation made real sense for your career: a clear step-up, a new challenge with many opportunities to learn, to grow and become a better leader.  When you come back, it's the same : you want to leverage your expat experience and skills in your next job, to continue to learn and grow, to reach the next step. To do that, you need to take the time, while still abroad, to anticipate and prepare for your return. 🌏 🛬 You moved back home last summer? Now, almost 6 months down the lane, how well re-acclimated do you feel ? Thriving as an expat spouse means many things. And it means different things for the individual expat spouse. Having a plan and a purpose is key though, regardless of what the plan entails. ✍ That said, the plan does not always pan out as wanted and that’s when we have to look at plan B. In our experience and from the numerous 1:1 sessions we have with expat spouses making a plan with and for them, it is particularly the "getting a job plan" that can be impossible. This is highly frustrating 😖 for most and the more job application rejections received, the higher the likelihood for not thriving. This causes the expatriation to be at risk and that’s not what we want. 👎 Thus, we always incorporate a deadline for when to stop applying for jobs and start looking at plan B. Often plan B involves exploring the entrepreneurial way. Choosing that direction has its pros and cons when living as an expat and there are several things to consider.
