In Ljubljana, Slovenia, an adaptive reuse project, brings natural light into the heart of its historical past. Built initially in the 1930’s, the home was built for the bourgeois of the time. In the 1980’s it was extensively renovated, which took away a lot of its original elements and broke it up into separate parts. The latest owners, wanted to bring the property back to its former glory, nodding to its historical elements, while creating a stronger connection with its outdoor spaces. Clearstory windows allow for an abundance of natural sunlight to filter into the spaces, reducing the need for additional lighting. A large and expanded outdoor garden space, allows for the owners to have an outdoor living room as well as an indoor one. The architecture team wanted to protect and preserve the existing building, which, subsequently reduced the need for outside materials being brought in, lowering its overall carbin footprint. There are so many different ways for designers to approach sustainability initiatives, and each of them are important and contribute to the greater goal, of lowering carbon emissions. 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Beauty is my and our passion at Philipp Architekten. We love to design places, buildings and spaces that are first and foremost "beautiful". Our greatest intention is to restore the importance of beauty in architecture, to bring it back into balance with function, which has been extremely exaggerated by "form-follows-function" over the last 100 years. In my opinion, good architecture manages to combine function and beauty in equal measure. Just like Villa Philipp, a bespoke residence that perfectly combines both, incorporates people and seems to merge with nature. We love this quote by Arthur Erickson, it really encapsulates the idea that truly exceptional architecture goes beyond its functional purpose, deeply touching our emotions and leaving a lasting impact on us. Just as Erickson suggests, modern architects and builders who work with hempcrete create unique and poetic structures that reflect their passion for sustainable living and innovative design. Hempcrete buildings are products of careful consideration, merging functionality with an artistic vision to shape spaces that resonate with both the inhabitants and the environment.
