English Queen Anne "Tub" Arm Chair with Zebra Fabric - Wait, What?? Hybrid design is a topic I have touched on before.....and what I consider to be its increasing role in today's product design. I define "hybrid" as a mixing of style and function to make a product innovative, bright, and new - while at the same time appealing to what we already know and love. So, this chair rendering was an exercise in developing a rather unique form of chair that has a fresh face to it in the cover, yet could also connotate that the owner is stylish, fashion forward and has an appreciation for antiques and fine Estate Living. When current electronics technology meets classic craft design, people must feel something exciting. #HiddenIcon provides such unexpected user experiences. HiddenIcon normally exists as an interior in living spaces such as home, office, vehicles, and so on. Then it changes into a console panel in the case of necessity. This product comprises a combination between a decorative molding component and a LED back light. When back light turns off, we can see only decorative graphics as wooden, hairline-metallic and so on. While back light turns on, icons that are hidden under a decorative film are displayed clearly. Of course, icons can work by touch input. When users meet the moment of changing an ordinary interior into a functional panel, they must feel surprise and fun. Chairs in the The Dis/assembly Chairs project share a common simplicity and flatness. Each was cut from a 4’ x 4’ sheet of plywood, and can be assembled without glue or screws. "Making a 'simple' design is often the hardest,” says Max Fertik, “because to make it look simple, it has to work and it has to work well.” "The whole idea was –  let’s investigate why we need to open our eyes to the ordinary,” says Fertik, whose Instagram moniker is @kuh_schlank . “Let’s discuss what it means for an object to be timeless.”  To address these questions, this American designer created 40 flat-pack chairs using assembly/disassembly methods along with traditional Japanese dry-fit joinery techniques. He explored miniatures and 3D prints to create prototypes, two of which were made from lightweight sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana). Fertik emphasizes the project as a response to  fast furniture – “assembled once with intention.” Dis/assembly Chairs emphasize sustainable and circular design practices. Flat-pack design reduces the space used in transportation, leading to lower shipping-related carbon emissions. By avoiding glue and other adhesive materials, Fertik designs allow for reparability and recyclability, extending the chairs' lifecycle.
