Roads can be barriers as well as routes; so anything we can do to enable accessibility should be supported. We need to prioritise the right journeys in the the right places so hopefully this is successful.

Accessibility empowers folks to be self-sufficient. It isn’t difficult. When we help one group, we help many groups. For instance, audio signals are also helpful for busy folks who are texting. Tactile information is helpful for neurodiverse folks. Maps like the tactile map in this example help everyone understand and prepare for the island halfway across the street. Accessibility in the built and digital environments isn’t expensive. (Because when we empower people to be self-sufficient, our society overall saves time and money.) Never in history have we been so well-positioned to improve the built environment. 3D Printers, CNC Routers, free languange translation online (including Braille), inexpensive electronics (sensors), and many construction standards (that are already in place) could merge with the inclusion of folks of all abilities and backgrounds in the planning, design, and testing to improve our built and digital environments. The only things preventing us from being truly great are: a lack of knowledge about how close we are to providing appropriately for all, greed, and/or ableism.
