RWE has secured planning committee approval for Enoch Hill 2, an extension of the Enoch Hill Wind Farm near New Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland.
The formal decision notice from East Ayrshire Council is expected in early 2025.
The approved extension will include two wind turbines, each with a tip height of 150 metres and a capacity of 5 MW, alongside an 11 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Once operational, the project is expected to generate clean energy sufficient to power approximately 11,500 homes annually. It will also provide around £50,000 per year in community benefit funding, subject to the final installed capacity.
Victoria Allen, Head of Onshore Renewables Development Scotland, stated: “We are thrilled to have secured planning committee approval for Enoch Hill 2. This project represents another step towards supporting Scotland’s renewable energy goals while delivering benefits to the community in East Ayrshire. With Enoch Hill 1 progressing, we are confident in the success of this extension, which will further enhance the region’s contribution to a sustainable energy future.”
Enoch Hill 2 builds on the ongoing development of Enoch Hill 1, a 60 MW wind farm comprising 15 turbines. Construction of Enoch Hill 1 is advancing, with nine turbines fully installed and the remaining six partially erected.
Major civil works are complete, and all large machinery has been demobilised. Grid connection for Enoch Hill 1 is expected by June 2025, with commissioning set to follow shortly after.
A community consultation for the Enoch Hill 1 Wind Farm Community Fund is underway, with an online survey open until 12 January 2025. Results are scheduled for release in spring/summer 2025.
Once fully operational, Enoch Hill Wind Farm, including the extension, will provide up to 70 MW of renewable energy capacity, supporting Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions while generating long-term value for the local community.
The final investment decision for Enoch Hill 2 is expected in late 2025, with construction set to begin in spring 2026. The project is slated for completion and operation by the third quarter of 2027.
RWE’s onshore wind portfolio in the UK currently includes 32 operational sites with a combined installed capacity of 735 MW.
The company has an additional 168 MW under construction in Scotland and is advancing a strong development pipeline of 22 projects across Scotland and Wales.
