Our german friends and leaders in the energy and water field are experiencing slight criticisms these days. Bloomberg and others tell the story of #methane emissions by energy producing scheme that are underestimated by a factor of multiple hundreds. Internal industry assessment models are told to be, well, inappropriate. Once again here, choosing a third party methane monitoring companion and expert (not a data broker right!) is the way to tell a strong story and kind of stay alive reputation wise. Another fun topic, very large #water reservoirs are told to be designed as a replacement purpose for coal extraction site in Germany ... with this time anticipated #methane emissions here again. A fact that is becoming a public issue to be seized as well as methane emissions from water is a reality to be known. Interesting to learn more from Jack Angela of Orbio Earth (YC S23) about #methane. Most of what we need to do around #sustainability in the #insurance industry would benefit from more and better #data. That's where Orbio comes in. " The old adage "You cannot improve what you do not measure" is a phrase you hear a lot when it comes to working with methane data. But it really does encapsulate the current state of methane emissions from the Oil and Gas industry. While the International Energy Agency estimates that current methane inventories underestimate actual #emissions by roughly 70% (Source: IEA ), our analysis of internal data at Orbio Earth reveals a more complex picture. Through our methane intelligence platform we found that many operators actually under-report emissions by around 30%, while some publicly listed companies under-report by as much as 90%. Additionally, we found some operators over-reporting emissions, possibly to create a false impression of positive declining trends over time, further complicating the calculation of total methane emissions. Unpicking why there are these discrepancies involves looking at the nature of the industry, the properties of methane itself and existing practices currently in place.  " https://lnkd.in/ec7U6rrE

#Methane agreements at #Cop28 are bittersweet progress while #fossilfuel co’s keep planning expansion. #Gas wells & infrastructure must be funded & maintained by humans forever if they’re not capped thoroughly. There are more than 3.2 million deserted oil and gas wells in the US and an estimated 29 million globally, according to Reuters. There’s no regulatory requirement to monitor methane emissions from inactive wells.

Nearly half of all emissions from oil and gas operations come from methane, which is up to 80 times more harmful than CO2 (IEA). Together with Drew Pomerantz we describe various types of flaring and demonstrating ways to reduce methane emissions and achieve zero routine flaring.

My latest insight for MEES. https://lnkd.in/d43NXqtF Methane Emissions Rose in 2023 Despite Modest Oil Gains The latest World Bank report on global methane emissions makes for stark reading. It signals the need for stepped up action if a 30% reduction and zero routine flaring targets are to be attained by 2030. That seems rather optimistic as emissions of the potent greenhouse gas rose last year to their highest level since the pre-covid pandemic.   The Global Gas Flaring Tracker Report issued in June shows that volumes of methane emissions associated with upstream oil and gas operations rose by 7% to an estimated 148 BCM in 2023 from 139 BCM the previous year. It notes that this occurred despite a mere 1% rise in oil production, which means higher flaring intensity per barrel produced.

ICYMI: Last week, Waste Gas Capture Initiative Executive Director Michael Moore delivered prepared testimony at the IRS' public hearing on the proposed regulations governing implementation of the Section 45V Credit for Production of Clean Hydrogen. In his testimony, Moore called for swift action to ensure the successful inclusion of mine methane under the Inflation Reduction Act: "The industry is ready to go on this effort. This is about remediation of a coal industry that is required to vent methane for safety of its workers. But by avoiding capturing this methane at the source, like we can today, we risk having to confront the more challenging, more expensive task of directly capturing methane from the atmosphere in the future. We should work to capture the methane emitted from coal mines now before it becomes necessary to capture it from the atmosphere—which is estimated to be ten times as expensive." Today, WGCI Executive Director Michael Moore delivered testimony at the IRS' public hearing on the proposed rule on the Section 45V Credit for Production of Clean Hydrogen to ensure the successful inclusion of mine methane under the IRA. In his testimony, Moore encouraged the Treasury to consider important policy implementation factors that will encourage the capture and productive use of fugitive methane to reduce emissions and create thousands of good-paying jobs, including: - Accepting Argonne National Laboratory's GREET R&D model as the sole life cycle analysis tool accepted under the program - Establishing that the first productive use requirement is to be applied on a coal mine methane source borehole basis - Allowing for unrestricted storage and book and claim delivery, as well as the implementation of the CMM-to-power pathway Read our full testimony here: https://lnkd.in/dPbb2Uxg
