Our members Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. (GESG) have just released a powerful short film, "Local Climate Solutions: Biodiversity & Forest Conservation in the Sierra Gorda" 🎥🌎 For 36 years, GESG, led by environmental leader Martha "Pati" Ruiz Corzo, has championed the preservation of the Sierra Gorda bioregion in Querétaro, Mexico. GESG’s efforts have included creating economic incentives for forest owners to conserve their land, as well as successful science-based models and regional carbon reduction initiatives. In the face of the current climate crisis, it can be easy to lose enthusiasm. But it’s organisations like GESG who are providing a beacon of hope, demonstrating the potential for local actions to drive global change. This film tells their story and invites us all to be part of a global movement to shape the future of our planet, starting at the local level. 🌍 Celebrate International Biodiversity Day! 🌍 Greenstone champions to "Be Part of the Plan”, a powerful call to action for all of us to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as The Biodiversity Plan through the United Nations. Janice Christian at Greenstone Engineering Ltd. is our biology expert and shared this with us: "We, who live in Northern Ontario, value our water, mountains, forests, wetlands, and other areas for their beauty and the many experiences they provide. For me, one of the most important is the wide variety of native plants and animal species I see. Even in Northern Ontario, however, many species are at risk including many songbird species, Lake Sturgeon, the Monarch Butterfly, several bumblebee species, Caribou, Eastern Wolf, and seven of Ontario’s eight bat species. Some of the threats are habitat loss, invasive species, population growth, pollution, and climate change. It is difficult to know what we as individuals living in Northern Ontario can do. One idea for this spring is to plant a pollinator garden with native flowing plant species." Keep an eye out for posts about Greenstone's efforts for environmental stewardship and conservation! #BiodiversityDay #BePartOfThePlan #Biodiversity #Conservation #Sustainability #COP16 #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #Environment #NairobiMeetings #CelebrateNature #ProtectOurPlanet

🌿 Understanding Natura 2000: Europe's Lifeline for Biodiversity 🌿 Did you know that Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world? Established under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, this network is crucial for preserving Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats. Key Facts about Natura 2000: 🔹Extensive Coverage: Natura 2000 covers over 18% of the EU’s land area and nearly 9% of its marine territory. 🔹Diverse Sites: Includes Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) to safeguard various ecosystems. 🔹Legal Framework: Ensures that any projects or plans respect the ecological value of these sites through rigorous assessments. 🔹Biodiversity Focus: Aims to protect over 1,000 rare and threatened species and 233 habitat types. Why is Natura 2000 Important? ✅Biodiversity Conservation: Plays a critical role in halting biodiversity loss and ensuring ecosystem resilience. ✅Sustainable Development: Balances environmental protection with social and economic needs. ✅Climate Regulation: Contributes to climate change mitigation by preserving carbon sinks like forests and wetlands. #Ireland #Natura2000 #ClimateActionPlan #Biodeversity #Habitats

International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems - July 26th Mangroves are among the most vital ecosystems on our planet, serving as nurseries for marine life, protecting coastlines from erosion and acting as essential carbon sinks. The International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems highlights the crucial role these unique forests play in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity. Unfortunately, mangroves are in danger of extinction. More than three quarters of the world's mangroves are threatened, along with all the aquatic and terrestrial organisms that depend on them (Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO). During my last vacation I visited coastal cities in Bahia - Brazil, I had the opportunity to see the beauty of this ecosystem, a brief excerpt of which is represented by this short video. This experience allowed me to hear the voices of local residents who experience the importance of mangroves for numerous environmental reasons and for their communities' food security and source of income. So it's worth reinforcing our commitment to environmental conservation and the urgent need to raise awareness about the threats facing mangroves, such as deforestation, pollution and climate change. We must stand alongside these communities in the effort to preserve these unique ecosystems. #Mangroveconservation #Biodiversity #Environmentalawareness #Climateaction

"Preserving Biodiversity" Biodiversity conservation is of paramount importance in the face of current climate changes. As the Earth's climate continues to shift, numerous species are being pushed to the brink of extinction. Biodiversity, the variety of life on our planet, provides a multitude of essential ecosystem services such as pollination, nutrient cycling, and climate regulation. By safeguarding biodiversity, we can enhance the resilience of ecosystems to climate change impacts. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting and restoring habitats, promoting sustainable land and water management practices, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, raising awareness about the significance of biodiversity conservation and fostering international cooperation are crucial steps in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on our planet's diverse array of species. Through these actions, we can strive towards a sustainable future that ensures the survival and well-being of all living organisms. #BiodiversityConservation #ClimateChange #SustainableFuture #ProtectOurPlanet #EcosystemResilience #SpeciesSurvival #ClimateAction #NaturePreservation #GlobalCooperation #AwarenessMatters

International Day of Biological Diversity! This year, we celebrate under the theme "Be Part of the Plan," emphasizing the critical role each of us plays in protecting and restoring our planet's rich biological diversity. Biodiversity is essential for the health of ecosystems, the stability of our climate, and the well-being of all living beings. Today, let's commit to sustainable practices, support conservation efforts, and advocate for policies that protect our natural world. Together, we can make a significant impact. Let's be part of the plan to preserve biodiversity for future generations! To help biodiversity, we can: 1. Use eco-friendly products. 2. Support wildlife protection groups. 3. Push for laws that protect nature. 4. Teach others about biodiversity. 5. Plant native plants and create habitats. #biodiversity
