Well, it seems I couldn’t disagree more with the leader of Total. Astonishing complacency and inertia in the face of ever worsening climate conditions and prospects. I don’t believe that ‘we couldn’t stop using damaging products because our share price would be affected, and anyway we only sell what people want’ is a slogan that history will judge kindly I also don’t think the system costs of intermittent renewables are going to be anything like as costly as he suggests. That said, he does make a very good point re the global south- there needs to be much more happening to avoid lock in to fossil fuels, and to ensure people have access to energy #climatechange #climatecrisis #energytransition https://lnkd.in/eWzf73ax

FACT 1: Gas is a fossil fuel that worsens harmful climate pollution. FACT 2: Over 80% of gas produced in Australia is shipped overseas, along with the profits. FACT 3: Gas is driving up power prices in Australia. FACT 4: Renewable energy now makes up about 40% of Australia’s electricity in the National Electricity Market. Read everything you need to know about why gas stinks here:

A paradox lies at the heart of Australian public opinion about climate change. While there is clear general support for substantial government action to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, there is also strong concern about the local impacts of new renewable energy infrastructure. The rise of protest groups in regional Australia objecting to the installation of wind farms and transmission lines, in particular, presents a serious challenge to the Albanese government in communicating the importance of the net zero transition to the public. Protecting nature while accelerating the transition to renewables to limit climate change, one of the biggest threats to nature, is not a competing agenda it's a complementary one – one that needs better planning and management than Governments have so far been willing or able to deliver. Our planning and approvals systems need to stop new fossil fuels and support renewables to ensure we use the right technology in the right place. https://lnkd.in/erh398fT

https://lnkd.in/gygXX_zZ This is significant! Many of us have been campaigning for incorporating environment into the National Electricity Objective for more than 15 years so this is so great to see. For years we have had to argue why decisions right across the energy system need to take into consideration decarbonisation and broader climate/environmental goals but faced consistent push back due to the narrow scope of the NEO (I explained it a bit more here in 2022; https://lnkd.in/dBUZnXSF). In the early 2010's when a bunch of cross sector orgs came together to jointly advocate on this it copped a lot of push back and continued to seem like an impossible thing to get over the line. It was also hard to explain why it was so critical even though it clearly was affecting even the smallest of energy rule change proposals and market decisions. So this is a great decision and advocacy win and goes to show sometimes things just take a really bloody long time!
