Since the announcement of the finalists in this year’s EADT Suffolk Business Awards, I’ve been reflecting on the unexpected insights and learnings of being on ‘that side’ of the award process. For those who don’t know, we’ve been lucky enough to be on the recipient end of a judging panel (and to have emerged victorious twice). The very practice of allowing that external assessment of yourself and your business is, as so many of you know only too well, somewhat intimidating – no matter how sure you are of your business and your experience. This time, however, and having historically won the Customer Service category in both Suffolk and Norfolk, I felt incredibly honoured to be asked to judge this particular category. Initially, I found myself thinking ‘this will be a breeze’, and that I had nothing to fear or consider. What I found, however, is that it was far more of an opportunity for self-reflection and benchmarking than I might have considered prior to taking part. How can you not be faced with an entry or a conversation from a vibrant goal-setting business, and not find yourself looking at how this compares to what you do, or how you reached this point in the journey? I’m someone who has always been of the view that a child can teach an adult as much as the adult can teach the child – and I suppose this exercise is similar. I learned from their desire, entrepreneurship and their unique approaches to managing customer interaction. My takeaways for anyone considering being a business award judge: - Do your homework on the business and seek to raise questions which are truly beneficial for your learning of them and their understanding of you. - Be self-reflective (not selfish) throughout the process, considering whether the activity leads itself to more learning and development you might require. - Embrace the chance to extend your network and relationships in directions you may never have considered. - Take time to reflect on the process with your own colleagues or peers, being sure to bring to mind particular areas which now seem evident for your own business improvement or for your chance to become active in the art of mentoring. Good luck to all of the finalists from myself and the MAD-HR Ltd team. Hospitality specialist leading a team that gives you direct, actionable insight for meaningful change
Let’s pause for thought on Pepper Lunch… Those of us in Asia might be a bit more familiar with a brand born in Japan with stores across the region. The reason I’ve been mentioning them more frequently is not just because Troy Hooper is an all star CEO leading their North American business but Pepper Lunch is hitting the right notes on both consumer and operator levels 🎯 Bullseye on consumer demand for freshness - cooking at your table is as fresh as it gets 🎯 oomph on consumer demands for customisation hits the spot ✅ Simple operations with a combination of proprietary technology and low skill requirements ✅ Kit format elements to ensure menu execution is repeatable with labor challenges The North American leadership team have injected high levels of energy and positivity into the business along with their depth of expertise. The market is tough but a combination of consumer centricity on experience and operator simplicity on execution is without doubt the common denominator of those winning right now
CEO who values the perspective of all who are willing to unite to exceed expectations. Driven to bring value every day.
#4?!? WHAAAT?!?! I have truly never been more shocked in my entire life! Pepper Lunch Restaurants has been not only named a Fast Casual Top 100, but was ranked by a committee of trade press, industry vendors, and brand executives as #4 among the 2024 class! 15 months ago almost no one in the industry had heard of our incredible brand of 30 years with 516 (463 then) locations in 15 countries. They certainly didn’t know we had been open in North America for 6 years with 7 stores. But today the industry certainly has said they see us, they are paying attention to what we are doing, and more importantly how we are doing it! This is acknowledgement that our teams insanely hard work is being noticed! That how is more important than how many! Congratulations to the entire global team for being the best, the most passionate, and the most consistent brand group I know! Thank you to the committee, this incredible community of leaders, and to our team who deserve this recognition for their hard work, dedication, and passion for the mission they bring everyday! Congratulations to so many of our friends who deservingly made the list and everyone who plays a part in making this community so amazing! The Citizens M&A Advisory team is pleased to share the April Restaurant Industry Insights from our expert M&A Franchise team at Trinity Capital, a division of Citizens Capital Markets. Managing Director Howard Lo said: “Consumer spending grew throughout 2023, defying many predictions. Spending was bolstered by healthy consumer sentiment resulting from growing asset values in real estate and U.S. equities. Overall, 2024 should be a promising year for operators due to rising real consumer incomes, moderating inflation and a normalizing labor market.” Read more on the latest trends in the April Restaurant Industry Insights.http://spr.ly/6047b8jB1 #Restaurant #RestaurantIndustry #Hospitality #Franchise #Insights #MergersAndAcquisitions

🏆 Awards: What Can They Do for Your Personal Brand? 🏆 Last night I had the pleasure to attend the National Building & Construction Awards and sat on a table full of BITA members. I have been to a few ceremonies recently. Mostly similar in format and, of course, absolutely commercial in their purpose. For the people and companies who enter, they are costly—not just in terms of entry fees, but also the time needed to gather entries, attend the awards nights, and manage all the paraphernalia that surrounds it. 💸 But what is the value from a personal perspective? Your biggest barrier to personal brand growth is confidence. 💪 Awards force you to promote what you do to others, to sell yourself, and to reflect on something you’re proud of. And even if you don’t win… activity breeds activity. So, time spent on such pursuits can only be positive in building momentum and growing your profile. 🚀 Not to mention the networking opportunities these awards provide: a room full of people who aspire to take their business to the next level and who care deeply about their business and personal growth. 🌐✨ Thank you, Paul Whitnell, for inviting me onto the judging panel this year for the National Building & Construction Awards. It was a pleasure to be at a table with you, Angie Pool (pictured), Daryl McCarthy, Drew Montague and James Horton. 🎉 #Awards #PersonalBrand #ConfidenceBoost #ProfessionalGrowth #Networking #MomentumMatters #CelebrateSuccess #ReflectAndGrow #LinkedInCommunity #BuildingProfile #BusinessGrowth

Our co-founder and Managing Director Tracey Pollard shared a fascinating insight into current market trends at the sold-out THE LEISURE PROPERTY FORUM Annual Review panel event on Wednesday - alongside hugely informative presentations from Simon French (Panmure Gordon) David Bell (Stärka ) Toby Hall (CBRE ) and Emma McLarkin (British Beer & Pub Association) So what were the Tracey's key insights? - F&B growth driven by pubs and deliveries: F&B improved in 2023, seeing 9.5% growth despite increased inflation. Pubs, takeaways and fast food all performed strongly compared to restaurants, suggesting people are downscaling ‘treats’ rather than foregoing them entirely - Strong demand for prime London sites, often attracting multiple offers - Increasingly complex transactions, increase in management agreements and requests for cap expenditure due to lack of finance continue to create challenges. A few examples of brands that saw strong growth in 2023: Flat Iron - With 2023 a record year, they are now targeting 4-5 new restaurants annually - Greggs - Now looking beyond high streets for expansion to retail parks, supermarkets and even roadside locations - Flight Club - There are now 12 across the UK, as well as 6 in the US and 1 in Aus - with more in the pipeline Looking Ahead... Despite industry challenges including cost increases from the National Living Wage, political uncertainty, strikes and funding, the outlook for 2024 is overwhelmingly positive - with increased international tenant interest, a growth in high end dining and the return of tourists to the UK just some of the opportunities ahead. Here’s to continued growth in 2024! #LeisurePropertyForum #panmurelondon #Starka #CBRE #FlatIron #flightclub #Greggs

It is not often that history combines with lease advisory. SHW Property are instructed by the landlords of the very first McDonalds in the UK. Opening in November 1974, when Harold Wilson was Prime Minister and David Essex topped the charts, the restaurant at 56/58 Powis Street, Woolwich, was also the 3,000th McDonalds in the world. After the expiry of the second of two 25 year leases - remember them ? - SHW are instructed to agree terms for for only the third lease on the property in 50 years. One can only wonder how many burgers have been flipped in that period. #property #leaseadvisory #makingpropertywork
