Is BYD moving to be next auto leader in the world? Uber has announced a significant partnership with Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD to introduce 100,000 EVs to its global fleet. This multi-year deal aims to accelerate the adoption of greener rides by offering Uber drivers incentives such as discounts on maintenance, charging, financing, and leasing. The initiative will begin in Europe and Latin America, later expanding to the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This collaboration comes amid a global slowdown in EV sales and increased import charges on Chinese EVs in major markets like the US and EU. Additionally, Uber and BYD plan to integrate self-driving technologies into Uber's platform. BYD, the world's second-largest EV company, continues its global expansion with new manufacturing plants in Turkey, Thailand, Hungary, and planned facilities in Mexico. This partnership highlights a strategic move to reduce the total cost of EV ownership and promote sustainable transportation worldwide. #Uber #BYD #ElectricVehicles #GreenRides

It's impressive what BYD is achieving in the electric vehicle market in Latin America. While few dared to make large investments in the region, BYD has been surprising with announcements of investments in local production, technology development, and charging infrastructure. In a market largely dominated until then by American and European giants, BYD's arrival in the region has taken the dominant manufacturers out of their comfort zone, who have also announced billions in investments for industry transformation. The next few years will be full of opportunities and investments across the entire electric vehicle development chain.

If you're driving a lot, an #EV saves you money. If you're driving a lot, an EV saves your city a whole lot of emissions. That's clear to Uber, and if its earlier #electrification partners can't get their act together, it needs to get partners who can. This is what this deal with BYD is about. Cleaner, cheaper transportation. Eventually, every transportation company will get rational, with or without incentives. https://lnkd.in/gbPkUp5M #fleet #evfleet #tesla #hertz #fleetelectrification

Uber Partners with China's EV Giant BYD to Introduce 100,000 Electric Vehicles for Drivers 🚗🔋 Uber has announced a strategic partnership with BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, to introduce 100,000 electric vehicles into its global fleet. This move marks a significant step in Uber’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. 🌱 The collaboration aims to provide Uber drivers with access to affordable and reliable electric vehicles, helping to accelerate the transition to greener transportation. BYD, known for its advanced battery technology and innovative EV designs, will supply Uber with a range of electric models tailored to meet the needs of ride-hailing services. 🌍 Uber’s CEO emphasized the importance of this partnership in achieving the company’s ambitious goal of becoming a zero-emissions platform by 2040. He stated, "Our partnership with BYD underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability and supports our mission to offer cleaner, more efficient transportation solutions." 🤝 BYD's CEO echoed these sentiments, highlighting the significance of this collaboration in expanding the global presence of BYD’s electric vehicles. "We are excited to partner with Uber and contribute to the transformation of urban mobility. Our electric vehicles are designed to deliver superior performance, safety, and comfort, making them ideal for ride-hailing services." 💨 The introduction of 100,000 electric vehicles is expected to have a substantial impact on reducing emissions and promoting the adoption of clean energy in the transportation sector. Uber plans to roll out these EVs in key markets worldwide, starting with major cities where the demand for sustainable transport solutions is high. 🌐 This partnership not only reflects Uber’s commitment to sustainability but also represents a significant milestone for BYD as it continues to expand its footprint in the global EV market. Both companies are poised to benefit from the synergies created by this collaboration, paving the way for a more sustainable future in urban mobility. “Uber Technologies Inc. will team up with BYD Co. to put 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on to the ride-hailing company’s platform, in a major deal between American and Chinese businesses that notably excludes the United States. Under the multiyear partnership, the two companies will offer drivers lower pricing and financing for the EVs. The tie-up will start in Europe and Latin America, then expand to the Middle East, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Uber and BYD said Wednesday in a statement. The alliance bolsters Uber’s efforts to move the fleet of vehicles on its ride service to EVs — an initiative that had been losing momentum, according to Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s CEO. It is also a boost for BYD, which has been one of the world’s fastest-growing automakers in the past few years. That expansion was largely driven by sales within China’s massive car market, but the company now intends to expand into countries where its brand is less well known.” “‘We look forward to seeing our cutting-edge EVs become a common sight on the streets of cities worldwide,’ said Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD and CEO of BYD America. Uber shares jumped 2.6% in premarket trading Wednesday in New York. BYD shares have risen more than 6% this year in Hong Kong, boosting the company’s market capitalization to HK$734.6 billion ($94 billion). The partnership comes despite increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing over the future of the car industry. China has built a formidable lead in batteries and the EV supply chain, and the U.S. has been trying to push back against that dominance with punitive tariffs and tens of billions of dollars in tax credits for companies and customers. Uber and BYD make no mention of the U.S. in their statement, probably because the market is virtually closed off to the carmaker.” “President Joe Biden has vowed to increase tariffs on Chinese EVs to 102.5% this year, ratcheting up a rate that Donald Trump raised to 27.5% during his four years in the White House. The European Union and countries including Canada have followed suit, adopting or considering higher duties on Chinese EV imports, which could further complicate Uber’s objective of having only EVs in U.S., Canadian and European cities by 2030. One challenge has been the dearth of affordable, long-range EVs to compete with low-cost cars powered by combustion engines, such as the Toyota Prius. BYD has been making a concerted push to manufacture vehicles outside its home market, with a new plant in Thailand now online and plans for factories in Brazil, Hungary and Turkey. In February, the company agreed to supply cars to Vemo, a Mexico City-based startup offering electric taxis through Uber’s app.”
