Is school attendance an ongoing issue for your school? 😔 It’s ok, the problem is either there, or ever-threatening at every school. This is a rabbit-hole of a problem with loads of research, and no single answer, but there are some solutions that community-based school providers are already excelling at providing. Ask any teacher or education professional why non-attendance is so frustrating, and the answer is obvious: because there is nothing we can do for our young people if they aren't here. All the best learning in the world won't be of use if the student isn't there to receive it. One of my favourite papers on this very topic comes from Australia, and is over twenty years old (Oerlemans & Jenkins, 1998 if you are interested), and reported simple responses made by young people when asked the question: ‘what would make the difference?’. Their answers? (Stop me if you’ve heard these ones before): -         Fewer compulsory subjects -         A ‘friendlier’ school -         Relaxation of school uniform policy -         More free time on site -         A learning environment closer to adult conditions All of the above answers have a lot of depth to the young persons reasons and motivations, and there are multiple strategies to address them. The crux of the study (in my opinion) was to give the students who are disengaged a voice by simply asking and listening, the ideas may be radical, but the wisdom for how to address these issues are there. Community-based education providers are already doing so many of these things (and many, many more) in so many different ways. In order to tackle your non-attendance problems, it takes analysis of the environment, understanding your students barriers (ask them!) and development of a great strategy. I get to see the amazing ways our schools are addressing these issues all the time, and am happy to chat with you about these and your ideas for addressing this critical, and timeless, issue.

Good education management can help create an environment that gives room for inclusion to all races of students. Education management can also help in bridging the gap between students by providing the necessary interventions.

Through its evidence-based insights and practical strategies, the book offers a compelling roadmap for transformative change in education, urging stakeholders to prioritize policies that elevate the profession and ultimately improve student learning outcomes.

It's exciting to see the innovative ways some UK schools are reimagining education. From fewer exams to outdoor learning, progressive approaches support student well-being and development. Schools like London Park use holistic admissions. They focus on getting to know applicants versus entrance exams. Others are supplementing rigid GCSEs with flexible new qualifications that encourage creativity. Forest schools harness the benefits of nature with adventurous activities and conservation-minded trips. And some schools are addressing teenage biological clocks with later start times. Additionally, online and hybrid options meet needs unfulfilled in traditional environments. These blend personalized learning with vital social connections. Such developments promise more joy and less stress for both students and teachers. They set examples of empathy and responsiveness amidst outdated conventions. This spirit of rethinking learning plants seeds of potential.
