February Book Review: Start with Why, Simon Sinek Why is MedSTAT in business? What is our heart, mission, and purpose. This past month I finished reading Start with Why, by Simon Sinek. I realized at MedSTAT, we are very clear about what we do, and arguably more clear about how we do it, but I would like to share more about WHY we do what we do here at MedSTAT. My goal for the year is to make it very clear with our partners, customers, and others when they think of MedSTAT, they think of WHY we are in business.

The graft and craft of individual-level open innovation #openinnovation offers great potential for #organizations to tap into the pool of #ideas outside their organization. Yet, it is not straightforward for individual #employees to help their organizations realize that potential. In this book chapter in the Oxford Handbook of #Innovation (Oxford University Press), my coauthors Ammon Salter, Paola Criscuolo and I talk about the critical role of #technologyscouts, #gatekeepers and #innovationchampions (among others). We explain how these individuals can best build the #knowledge and #networks ("graft") and #skills and #workpractices (“craft”) they need to succeed in their role. You can access the chapter here: https://lnkd.in/e8XXKV5S Thanks Henry Chesbrough, Agnieszka Radziwon and Wim Vanhaverbeke for putting such a great collection of articles together in this handbook!

Read-worthy post on how to deal with disagreement in research co-production👇 by Gary Hickey- food for thought for anyone in patients' engagement in research. I do agree on the emphasis on people (as in 'disagree with argumentation or opinion but protect the person behind it'). I actually don't agree on the take that disagreement is something problematic, especially not in research- I mean, the entire point of stakeholder engagement is to get a *different* perspective, so if it were all just hunky dory happy agreement all the time, surely that would mean we are missing the point of the entire exercise? Also, in research- you know very well who your real friends are: they will trash your research proposal and send you your manuscript back with 100s of comments- to make sure you look your best going outside. Someone going 'oh that's perfect'- that's actually not a good sign... The entire point of patient or citizen engagement in research is to make research better and more relevant for society- so everyone should actually expect patients to take a keen eye and a sharp pen to any research proposal. And some of that might be valid and some of it might be not- that's where discussion is needed. And especially we as patient organisations should always know the point when to walk. These interactions- you can name them co-productions all you want- but they are rarely truly equal which leaves us with a high risk of co-option: us no real influence on the final say but our name used to endorse the product. Which is why....know your stuff, argue your case, lean into disagreement (but by all means, go for a beer with the people afterwards because bad intent is actually incredibly rare....)- but do walk if the end result is something that violates your key principles.
