Delighted that SuMi TRUST AM has been accepted as a signatory to the UK Stewardship Code. The internationalisation of the Code continues, with 7 of the 12 new AM signatories overseas asset managers - and a total of 40% of AM signatories headquartered outside of the UK. For overseas asset managers capable of clearing the high bar set out in the Code, the question now is how to maximise the benefits? There is a short-term halo effect - with discussions and disclosures on engagement, voting and multi-engagement activities associated with the UKSSC reporting resulting in a welcome transmission of know-how and deepening relationships with regional clients. However, in the long term the benefits will only be felt if the market proves capable of sorting the wheat from the chaff when it comes to who is creating value through long-term Stewardship and mitigating against avoidable costs. That will require efficient two-way information flow between asset manager and asset owner and a willingness to push each other to achieve excellence - without reaching breaking point! In my experience, the long term horizons and demanding client relationships, combined with the recently announced “Asset Ownership Principles” and the expected revision of the “Japan Stewardship Code”, offer hope that Japan can follow the UK to emerge as a force in global Stewardship best practice.

The Role of Share Buybacks and Strategic Investments Chief Analyst Masataka Kawabe, SPARX Japan Value Creation Strategy We're seeing a notable increase in share buybacks among listed Japanese companies, signaling a shift towards balanced management that includes both P&L and balance sheet considerations. This trend aligns with the Tokyo Stock Exchange's guidelines for sustainable growth, emphasizing long-term investments and structural reforms. The growing role of independent outside directors in these efforts is crucial for supervising management and supporting necessary changes. By focusing on these strategies, Japanese companies can strengthen their earning power and contribute to overall economic growth. I recently had the opportunity to attend a highly insightful seminar titled “Ethics and Accountability in Investment Management”, conducted by Shanta Asset Management. The session was an excellent blend of theoretical insights and practical guidance on navigating ethical challenges in the dynamic world of investment. The speakers shed light on the critical importance of integrity, transparency, and accountability in financial decision-making. From addressing conflicts of interest to fostering client trust, the discussions emphasized how ethical practices are not just principles but indispensable pillars of sustainable investment management. What truly stood out to me was the emphasis on the role of individual accountability in ensuring long-term value creation for all stakeholders. The seminar also provided actionable strategies for incorporating ethical frameworks into day-to-day operations in asset management. I am grateful to Shanta Asset Management for organizing such an enriching event and for their commitment to fostering a culture of responsible investment. This seminar has deepened my understanding of ethical considerations and inspired me to advocate for these values in my professional journey.

My views on the Indian Equity market. While price correction has happened, as cost of capital continues to be elevated, one can continue to expect time correction, if not price correction. The earnings need to pick up, liquidity alone can’t drive markets. This will be a good time to build portfolios over the next 6 to 9 months, as markets continue to remain volatile.
