𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩? 🤔 That's an age-old question that many university students would think about! As a Singaporean student who has done an overseas internship in Jakarta and now embarking on another one in Chongqing, I feel that every university student should consider embarking on one. Here's why 1️⃣ 𝐈𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 I feel that going on overseas internships requires some form of courage because you will be exploring the unknown. For example, you have to overcome language barriers to get your local phone number or rent a house. And the procedures can be very different from what we are used to in Singapore. Also, being away from the comfort of your home and family means that you have to figure out a lot of things independently, such as navigating the country that you will be located in. You will start to embrace the unknown and learn to overcome challenges along the way. 2️⃣ 𝐈𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐱 In Singapore, we are very used to following examples or instructions before working on something. But that's definitely not the case outside of Singapore! Different cultures in different countries mean different ways of doing things, and that pushes us to think out of the box to deal with different scenarios. 🤔 For example, a Javanese will not make it clear to you that they are okay or not okay with a business deal. You will have to learn to read between the lines and think of ways to convince them, such as initiating a coffee chat about their personal life. 3️⃣ 𝐈𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 😅 Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Singapore's university students are not well-educated. But staying in Singapore can only teach us this much about the world around us. After all, we are indeed a tiny red dot. By venturing beyond our shores, we get exposed to vastly different cultures and landscapes, which will broaden our perspectives and even change the way we look at things around us. 😲 For example, I learned that Indonesia is culturally diverse from my market research work, and by tasting different cuisines when traveling around the country. With that, I realized that while Singapore is a melting pot of cultures, we are not considered exceptional, and we become more educated about the world around us! 🇨🇳 That said, I am beginning to broaden my perspectives again during my first week in Chongqing, as I explore the local culture and interact with locals and Singaporeans based here. Looking forward to learning more about this city and the rest of China too! 🌍 This week I had an inspiring series of final discussions with students from around the globe! 🌟 Earlier this week, I concluded an internship review with one of our Sri Lankan student, Buddhi Piumantha, who was both visiting family and on a business trip in Sri Lanka, while residing in Italy. 💼 Buddhi successfully founded a business in Italy during his studies and completed part of his practical training for his own company. He has also had mentoring discussions with my Dutch colleague, Marcel Geffen, van, as SAMK offers enterprise accelerator services among other things. I suppose this is as international as it can get while studying in a Finnish university! 😉 As someone who has guided interns in the workplace and completed an education for workplace instructors, it has been rewarding to guide students in their practical training from academic point of view. I was thrilled when the Sri Lankan student said while reflecting on his practical training, that "I didn't understand your question back then, but I get it now." Moments like these, when students gain new insight, affirm that I have managed to encourage them to think deeply and grow. 🌱 👩🎓 Yesterday, I had a graduation talk with a Malaysian student who has settled in Pori and found a work place through practical training. 🎓 Today, I wrapped up a final discussion with a student who is currently in Japan. 🥂 Congratulations to all graduating students! 🌴 Tomorrow I will start my summer holiday. One of the key elements to being successful is having great people around you.

I remember the stress of landing a summer job when I was in college (while not knowing what I wanted to do). I remember the 100+ tailored cover letters that I wrote, and the <5% hit rate of getting interviews, that I bombed, every single one of them - consulting firms, investment banks, conglomerates... And all I wanted was that one opportunity to show how hard I could work, how much I could hustle, which Merrill Lynch ultimately gave me after I graduated.
