How Do You Know When You Need a Systems Engineer? A great, yet simple question! What benefits can you expect - how to qualify on an empirical base? And, what does it require to integrate her/him into the #organization to deliver that benefit? For choosing a Systems Engineer, not only the technical qualifications for the concrete role assignment will be substantial. As Suz Miller, Jeannine Siviy and Dr. John Wood from the Software Engineering Institute | Carnegie Mellon University lay out, you also need to mind the project’s environmental factors, for which I find this split-up (in short) very helpful: - Scope, Clarity, Size, Complexity - Decision Participation - Workload & Ticket Management The presenters give some helpful extra side references for further discovery: - the 3 C’s as “soft skills” to augment the “hard” (technical) skills: #Collaboration, #Communication, #Conflict Resolution. - a descriptive standard for the software lifecycle, that hints at the needed qualifications for a Systems Engineer, is #ISO15288 (System & Software Engineering - System Lifecycle Processes) - #Problemsolving techniques needed by Systems Engineers include not only the #5Whys or #Fishbone diagrams, a nice addition are Causal Loop Diagrams, displaying cause/effect relationships in graph-style connectivity (Kumu was mentioned as a tool in the area). - Bridging the gaps between role, process, and technical challenges in an #organization is touched in the recommended book “The Fifth Discipline” by Dr Peter Senge, generally about the “learning organisation” (not only for Systems Engineers). #systemsengineering #worktrends https://lnkd.in/evkft7xj
