I swear...I've had this conversation: "Let's have a professional sports league, where the players are ENCOURAGED to take steroids." It was fun; we laughed. But I think Peter Thiel may have been eavesdropping. Ok - I just want to be clear that in my version, I didn't stop with no drug testing. I imagined a world of full-contact tennis. Speedrunning Golf. Baseball with Takeshi's Castle-style obstacles that come out of nowhere and catapult base runners into a pool filled with electric eels. I mean...why stop so short as to just "not have drug testing?" LAAAAAME. To be fair, my thinking on this topic stopped right around last call...so the concept pretty much lives in a pristine state, without consideration of the many, many reasons NOT to do this. And while we're being fair, I also failed to really dig deep on all the reasons the concept actually makes sense. There is a robust PROS column here...I'm just not sure that it ultimately outweighs the CONS. According to Dr. Michael Sagner, “Contemporary drug testing practiced in sports today is not necessarily about athlete safety; it often skews the public perception of fairness and health in competitive sports. Enhanced will be adopting a sophisticated safety protocol which puts the athlete’s health first – including comprehensive health checks before and after competitions. As well as advanced screening to check for pre-existing conditions, for example, cardiac risk." Ok...so maybe there is something to this. I will counter that PRO with this equally fuzzy CON: The cultural impact on sports, which is a +$500 BILLION global industry, could be disastrous. The cultural impact on YOUTH sports...would be immediate, and disastrous. ...and maybe most importantly, the enshittification of our broader culture would accelerate with the speed of thousand Kardashians. As a civilized species, we have long taken pride in the glacial pace of our societal descent. Our collective destiny seems to be akin to a company seeking to be a "flat org," however...when that flatness is leveled at the lowest common denominator, our expectations and ambitions flatten with it. Am I over reacting? Yeah, probably...I mean, almost assuredly. But I look to what's become of music, of movies, of TV...do we want that of sports as well? Now...before you list off all the actually great bands/artists, movies, TV shows...the reasons there are bright beacons of exceptions, is because they are neon lights on a greyscale backdrop.
