How safe are our boarding schools? In the wake of the deadly fire, that has claimed 21 young lives, in Hillside Endarasha Academy! I went back to the safety standard manual of schools, to check what it stipulates! Thus it states; ⏸️For dormitories: 🔥Space between beds to be 1.2m and pathway space/corridor 2m! 🔥 Sharing beds is prohibited! 🔥 Doorways at least 5ft wide and open outwards! 🔥Doors NEVER to be locked from outside when learners are inside! 🔥A door at each end and additional emergency exit in the middle, clearly labelled 'Emergency Exit.' 🔥 Windows should be without grills and open outwards! 🔥 Functioning fire extinguishers and alarms placed at each exit! 🔥Bunk beds should be firm and fitted with side grills for younger learners! P.S. Did your school dormitories comply to all the above safety standards? P.S.S. I am available for education and SRHR advocacy and facilitation roles! N/B: I don't own rights to the video!

*Sometimes even those students do wonders from whom we do not have any expectations.* Something similar happened today when I asked the children in DCM Rama Sahu +2 high school to identify problems under the Change Project, the principal said that there are some students here who do not even know what a problem is. These were those students who never speak anything in the class, yet I included them in the change project group and when the time came to identify the problem, the same students who spoke very little were the first to tell about the problem which is as follows - 1. Importance of first aid box 2. Ask permission before going anywhere that help to reduce chaos in school ground. 3. Dustbin in each classroom 4. Application box 5. Wall clock in each class room for time management. *Sometimes we only need to give equal opportunity to all without any judgement so that we can identify the real potential of ignorant students.

Learning about traffic lights helps children understand road safety rules and the importance of following signals. This foundational knowledge improves their awareness of traffic flow and pedestrian safety, reducing the risk of accidents. By teaching kids the meaning of red, yellow, and green lights, they develop crucial decision-making skills and situational awareness. Traffic light education falls under early childhood education, road safety education, and life skills training, making it an essential part of comprehensive child development programs. Teaching children about traffic lights enhances their road safety awareness, decision-making skills, and situational awareness. WHAT DOES CHILD SAFETY LOOK LIKE? I've been trying to keep myself up to date on child safety in schools, and I find that there are often a lot of things that I never even thought of throughout my adult life. Child safety can be nuanced because there are a lot of hazards that most adults haven't even thought of. GOOD TOUCH/BAD TOUCH is something that much of the education space seems to be aware of now. Knowing our own BODY PARTS is a surprising one that I realize has been lacking in my own childhood. SECRETS are something I've learned can be life-saving for children to know how to deal with. A big one is BOUNDARIES. I've been going through resources that explain how to teach boundaries, and frankly, I needed to read these even as an adult. Are you aware of all these principles? Are there any others you can think of? Source: https://lnkd.in/gGAm46d4 #childsafeguarding #sexeducation #childprotection #safeschools

Thank you for sharing this, Adithya Rajaram! Usually while teaching and designing PSE courses with One Million against Abuse Foundation, we use the terms "safe" and "unsafe" touch in place of "good-bad" as the latter tends to confuse the younger audiences. A point I wish to include which we are also working to incorporate across all age group sessions, is online-social media-gaming-social community related safety. It is quite normal (unfortunately, may i add) to find children as young as 3 and 4 miraculously mastering access to and use of apps on phones, digital tablets, and computers. Informing both parents/caregivers and child on how to navigate murky online spaces has led to much-needed discussions around the impact of PSE on otherwise clueless adults who do not realize that even simple kid's games can come with a mountain of risks to their safety. On a less serious but also slightly humorous note, i recently helped a parent work around their payment settings, since their intelligent 4 year old, an avid player of the game "Best Fiends", had spent INR 8,999 on game boosts. He had mastered the art of using the "face id" feature using an ingenious method which i will not share here for obvious reasons.
