We are thrilled to announce the official formation of the African Aquaculture Business Leaders Network (AABLN) late last year. AABLN unites business leaders and key stakeholders from the African aquaculture sector who are coming together to accelerate the sustainable development of the African aquaculture sector. As big believers in using collaboration to unlock the greatest potential in a sector, we are honored to be supporting this dynamic group in determining how collaboration can help them meet their business and sustainability goals. Thank you to all the visionary leaders in the network and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for making this initiative possible. “Food systems leadership is something that we can actually build deliberately.” – Joost Guijt, African Food Fellowship Director. A big challenge that faces our food systems currently is inadequate investment by public and private sector actors in making our food systems meet our continent’s needs. The transformation of our food systems relies on critical elements such as evidence-building, availability of seed capital for small-scale farmers, adaptability to changes in our climate and digital eco-systems. This is only possible with deliberate and intentional investment in food systems leadership. Joost Guijt calls on intentional and scaled-up investments by financiers and duty-bearers to support initiatives aimed at building the leadership capacity of food systems leaders in Africa.

At the recent National Farmers' Federation Leadership Summit, our Founder and MD Robbie Sefton AM joined an insightful panel on how the agriculture sector is tracking towards becoming a $100bn industry by 2030. The discussion revealed both exciting opportunities and significant challenges that will shape our path forward. 🌱 Opportunities: The adoption of agtech and artificial intelligence presents a massive opportunity for attracting young talent to the industry, and increasing efficiency. The sector must unite on common issues to strengthen our collective voice, particularly in promoting the critical role farmers play in sustainability. Progressive farmers are leading the charge by enhancing their business skills, investing in their teams, and pursuing growth, providing a model for others to follow. 🚧 Challenges: Freight bottlenecks and high transport costs continue to impact profitability, both domestically and in export markets. Perception and communication remain hurdles. If we want to attract fresh talent to the sector, we need to change how farmers are perceived by urban consumers and actively engage in respectful, ongoing dialogue. Interest rates and rising costs are hitting highly geared young farmers hard, making profitability and sustainability increasingly difficult to achieve. 👂Did you attend? What did you take away?
