Regional officials have successfully secured a $6.8 billion federal funding agreement to advance the long-delayed Hudson Tunnel project, a critical $16.1-billion infrastructure overhaul linking New York and New Jersey. This project aims to rehabilitate a deteriorating, century-old rail tunnel and construct a new one, crucial for the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak's busiest route with over 2,200 daily trains. The federal funding agreement, marking a significant milestone, ensures the project proceeds regardless of potential changes in the Oval Office following the upcoming presidential election. The Gateway Development Commission, responsible for the project, will commence major construction this month, targeting completion by 2035. At a news conference, Kris Kolluri, CEO of the Gateway Development Commission, heralded the agreement as the "point of no return" for the project. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the project's reality, likening the effort to a marathon. The National Infrastructure Commission Infrastructure Progress Review 2024 was released today and it highlights the urgent need for enhanced North-South #rail links between #Manchester, #Birmingham, and #London. The report emphasises the significant economic benefits of improving these key connections, which are crucial for boosting Manchester's productivity and competitiveness. Place-based integrated transport solutions are critical! With the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd northern leg now cancelled, addressing capacity constraints on the West Coast Main Line and properly integrating Northern Powerhouse Rail with regional plans is more critical than ever. . . “A long term plan is needed to address the key #connectivity, #capacity and #reliability issues on the network and should be prioritised to support improvements in #productivity and #economic rebalancing”. If you’ve ever driven on I-4 near Champions Gate in Osceola County, you understand the significance of the Florida Department of Transportation unveiling schedules for the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, expected to reduce traffic congestion along the stretch from Champions Gate to Osceola Parkway, as well as on I-4 between U.S. 27 and Champions Gate. Proposed to the Legislature in January 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis’ Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative will accelerate priority infrastructure projects across the state through an allocation of $4 Billion from the General Revenue Surplus starting in the 2023-2024 budget year. These projects are slated to address congestion, improve safety, ensure a resilient transportation system, enhance the supply chain and economic growth, and address future needs as the state continues to experience rapid growth. #fdot #construction #civilengineering

It’s time to dig the tunnels. Finally. The $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project received a $6.8 billion full-funding grant from the federal government Tuesday — a celebratory moment for those who have spent more than a decade working to secure the funding on the largest infrastructure project in U.S. history. While work on major infrastructure updates on both sides of the Hudson River already has begun, this grant will begin the process of hiring crews to start the dig that will lead to two much-needed tunnels. Gateway Development Commission (GDC) CEO Kris Kolluri said the work could begin this year. The project, which will make much-needed improvements to the two existing tunnels (which were built more than a century ago) while creating two more, aims to be completed by 2035. While those involved were hopeful the final funding would be approved, there still was a sense of relief — and triumph — from all those involved. Read more:

A new survey was recently released highlighting infrastructure investments in the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway navigation system, and a reported $8.4 billion was committed to Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway shipping from 2018-2022! Over 700 private companies and governmental agencies in the United States and Canada were surveyed, and key highlights include: • $636 million was invested in vessel construction and enhancements. An additional $328 million will be invested by 2027. • $2.1 billion was invested to enhance port and terminal infrastructure. An additional $1.1 billion will be invested by 2027. • $3 billion was invested in navigation infrastructure. An additional $1.2 billion will be invested by 2027.
