Earlier today the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published "An Action Plan for Rail Energy and Emissions Innovation." Congratulations to Natalie Popovich and everyone else who worked hard to get this written and released. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to several sections of this report and I'm very glad to see it published! It's truly exciting to see a serious discussion about railroad electrification returning to the United States. I am hopeful that in the coming decades, we can catch up to the rest of the world and put some catenary poles in the ground. The operational and environmental benefits are immense. I'm also glad that I was able to get the North Carolina Railroad Company and the S-line included as priority corridors for electrification. The South deserves electrified rail as well and the NCRR is an incredible corridor with high freight and passenger traffic. (And if any Georgia folks are interested in talking with me about electrifying our state-owned corridor from Atlanta to Chattanooga, my inbox is always open.) If you're interested in reading the report you can find it linked here: https://lnkd.in/etFuhidf Other sector reports are here: https://lnkd.in/ex6As4Bm And if you haven't read my white paper on the US rail system, published in July, give it a look, it includes a section on electrification and international comparisons: https://lnkd.in/e2FzTR_9 #rail #decarbonization #freight #electrification

Repairing our national infrastructure means fixing dams, roads, bridges, public transport, ports, railroads, airports, and power networks. Alexander Hamilton's bank model, used since the 1700s, turned debt into credit for development. Roosevelt used a similar model to pull the U.S. out of the Great Depression. By leveraging capital, we can fund $5 trillion in infrastructure over 10 years. Sometimes, looking at our past helps solve today's problems.

Fantastic news for Northern Ireland, but also hightlights the need to invest in renewable electricity. NI has a legal obligation to achieve 80% renewable generation by 2030, which means more than doubling the current NI capacity. Some people ask if we are near 50% now why do need so much more... #RenewableElectricity is needed to decarbonise heat and transport. As we transition to fossil free transport, we already need the supply of clean renewable electricity to meet the increased demands. 🚌 🚗 Working together we can achieve these goals. It is better for the Northern Ireland economy, environment and consumer costs.
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has welcomed the roll-out of 100 new battery electric buses in a £64million investment by the Department in the decarbonisation of public transport. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eq-tJsCz Wrightbus

I'm really excited about EPA's Clean Ports Program announcement (https://lnkd.in/eSUG2yN3). This effort will send $3 billion to support port electrification - supporting the administration's Zero Emission Freight Corridor strategy (https://lnkd.in/e6t7njzV). A large portion of this funding is going to support electrification of drayage trucks. Drayage trucks - the vehicles used for unloading container ships - are prime candidates for electrification. Their average trips are short (roughly 140 miles a day the Port of NY/NJ), the fleets are centrally located, and reducing their emissions would make a huge difference for frontline communities. By one estimate, nearly 500 deaths a year around the Port of Los Angeles could be attributed to diesel drayage emissions alone (https://lnkd.in/e48v3hPm). But the charging demands for electrifying these fleets are significant. Individual depots host dozens to hundreds of vehicles with demanding duty cycles which require fast charging. And depots may be clustered closely together in areas without strong pre-existing infrastructure. For some of these large loads, upgrades to substations and even additional transmission will be required. (https://lnkd.in/ejE4dMKn). Fleet and depot owners, states and utilities will need to work with their grid operators to ensure that transmission upgrades are proactively planned to handle these large loads - particularly as grid operators are beginning to engage states in implementing FERC Order No. 1920.
