#simplelanguage #breakingnews 📢 Last week, I was mostly glued to the TV, watching the horrifying reports about the floods that destroyed so many households in Central and Eastern Europe (including in my home country). But in those sad moments, I also learned something interesting about a different way of delivering news.   At 7 PM on a weekday, ARD - one of the national German public service television networks - broadcasts its 'Review of the Day' segment in💡 simple language💡 Up to five breaking news items are chosen for the program. Reporters present them in such a way that even audiences with learning disabilities or less fluency in German can understand the overall message. That includes speaking slowly and clearly, repeating key information, and using basic vocabulary. As a trained journalist, language teacher and copywriter, I fully support this approach for three main reasons: 1️⃣ Simplifying #communication means more people can access verified and trustworthy sources of #information and educate themselves on global affairs. It helps them broaden their horizons. 2️⃣ It shows that the German network fosters #socialinclusion. That should be every media outlet's objective. 3️⃣ It’s a great way to learn Goethe’s tongue in an everyday setting. It can be easily adapted to other languages as well.
