🏅 #Paris2024 Olympics are much more than just another go around, but the first step towards the goal of financially sustainable Games: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDedk7na The Paris 2024 Olympics officially commence today, amidst a lot of fanfare and excitement, with a wholly unique opening ceremony on the Seine. That is not all that is new, as Paris 2024 aims to buckle the trend of overspending and increasingly expensive Games that has plagued recent Olympics. Cost saving measures are more tenable, given less stringent hosting requirements by the IOC, focusing on adapting the Games to the city and not the other way around, resulting in: 🥇 Re-use of existing venues (no expensive new builds that will become derelict) 🥈 Broader geographic dispersion to make use of existing venues (Paris, Lille, Marseille, Tahiti) 🥉 Temporary installations to be favored where there are no existing venues All these initiatives aim to make hosting more attractive again for cities, who have in recent years actively rejected submitting bids, due to the historic overspend observed, as well as pushback from local populations. Paris 2024 aims to be the first showcase of this new approach to the Games. It then lies in the hands of Milano-Cortina 2026, LA 2028, (newly conditionally confirmed) French Alps 2030, Brisbane 2032 and (newly confirmed) Salt Lake City 2034 to take over the baton and continue the journey towards financially sustainable Games. For more details, check out the full piece and enjoy the read!😄 Thanks for your support and stay tuned for more 🙌 #Paris2024 #Olympics #Sportsbusiness

Good Evening Folks, 📍Did you know that most countries do not want to host the Olympics anymore as they believe that juice is not worth the squeeze? I read a remarkable interesting article written by Joe Pompliano “Why No One Wants To Host The Olympics Anymore” discussing the reasons behind the current decline of interest in hosting the Olympics games for most jurisdictions. Here is an overview of main points discussed: 1️⃣ NBC and other TV channels have reported high viewership and impressive ad sales, but local businesses in the last recent Olympics in Paris reported fewer customers than expected. 2️⃣Costly Olympic History: The 1984 LA Olympics set a profitable example by using existing venues, yielding $215 million in profit. This sparked intense competition among cities to host the Games. 3️⃣ IOC’s Increasing Demands Raise Costs: With more cities bidding, the IOC began requiring expensive permanent infrastructure. Many developing countries saw the Olympics as a way to rapidly boost tourism, which drove up expenses even more. 4️⃣ Ballooning Budgets: Recent Games have exceeded their original budgets by billions: London by $13 billion, Sochi by $41 billion, and Rio by $6 billion. Studies show that Olympic costs average three times the initial estimate, and no event has stayed on budget in 60 years. 5️⃣Low Returns and Temporary Employment: Host countries often struggle to break even. Beijing (2008), London (2012), and Tokyo (2021) all made only a fraction of what they spent, and most jobs created are temporary. 6️⃣Security costs have been raised due to safety requirements raised in recent century, with host countries now spending $1-2 billion on average, compared to Sydney’s $250 million in 2000. 7️⃣Controlling and limiting expenses by reusing existing structures and investing in legacy projects like the Paris project cost a $1.5 billion to clean up the Seine River that could have lasting benefits. 8️⃣Decline in Cities Bidding to Host as many cities are questioning the financial benefits of hosting. Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Olympics by default after other cities dropped out. Salt Lake City and Brisbane also won their bids unopposed for the 2034 Winter and 2032 Summer Games, respectively. 9️⃣IOC has introduced multi-city and multi-country bids to make hosting more manageable, but unless demands decrease, more countries may see hosting the Olympics as too costly.
