“The Rick Rubin of Sports” I was on a call recently, outlining the work we do at Way to Play, and I spoke to the values I hold myself and the business to, to which the response was “you’re a bit like the Rick Rubin of Sports”... I took this as a huge compliment, and in some ways I can see the link. Sports is about competition, and competition can feel tough at times, but I see the immense and artistic beauty in sport too. However…. … As someone that has long since admired Rick’s creative mind; his work; and success through the years, I think there is only some limited truth to this... Rick Rubin has spoken of his lack of technical skills and reliance on his own ‘taste’ as the key determiner of his success. I think this is important - you have to like what you do and what you create - but I also firmly believe in the importance of technical skills. To put it another way, I believe in the intuitive magic of creativity, but I also believe in the importance of scientific and technical skills to support in bringing ideas to life, and then - importantly - maximising their effectiveness. While I may be somewhat (happily) like Rick, I prefer to think of myself and the work Way to Play creates as being ‘strategically imaginative.’ When science and creativity come together, that is when the magic happens - the evidence is clear. There is a hint of Rick in there, and I think that is a really good thing. P.S. Here is a picture of Rick Rubin. I am sure you can see the resemblance.

The research involved 300 fans from Newcastle United Football Club and Sunderland AFC. The key findings are: - Fans are more likely to accept a rival team's sponsor if the sponsor’s brand matches the image of that team. - If fans already liked the sponsor before, they will still feel positive about them, even if they sponsor the rival team. - Fans who strongly support their team pay extra attention to the sponsors of rival teams and think more about those sponsorships. - Schadenfreude (taking pleasure in a rival’s bad luck) has a bigger impact on how fans feel about rival sponsors than fan loyalty. Fans may enjoy disliking the sponsor of their rival team, which influences their behavior.

Excited to share that I’ve just completed an online course on *The Business of Football* by The Open University! As someone deeply passionate about the intersection of sports and business, this course has been a game-changer. Over the past three weeks, I’ve explored what truly sets the football industry apart – from its emotional impact to its unique business model. In my last post, Miguel Ángel Gil from Atlético de Madrid spoke about how football is driven by passion. Interestingly, other professionals share similar views. Pete Winkelman, owner of MK Dons, mentioned, “Fundamentally, it’s not a business, but an emotional driver, identity, and celebration of a place you are in.” And Andrew Cullen, director at MK Dons, emphasized, “It’s not a product you can take or leave. You’re dealing with people’s emotions… even if customers are disappointed, they keep coming back.” The course dove deep into the essence of the football business, exploring topics like the external environment, stakeholders, the rise of women’s professional football, and the unique challenges the sport faces. I learned how football, unlike other industries, thrives on passion, loyalty, and community. Even when a team is struggling on the pitch, fans stay committed, showcasing the powerful emotional connection that drives this sector. We also examined player development in South America, particularly in Brazil and Argentina, and how the globalized nature of football has shaped these regions into football powerhouses. I gained insights into wages, the increasing importance of audiovisual rights as a revenue stream, and the ongoing debate around the possibility of a biennial World Cup. One of the highlights was learning from interviews with leaders like Pia Sundhage (gold-medal-winning coach) and management teams from clubs like Chesterfield and MK Dons. They offered incredible insights into the behind-the-scenes world of player sales, team development, and the business of building successful clubs. Last month, some highly distinguished sports professionals and I spoke at the INTERNATIONAL SPORTS CONVENTION on the subject of an independent integrity agency for sport. Here are some of the key takeaways from that session... 🙋♂️ An independent sports integrity agency concept, whether regional, global, sport-specific (as with tennis) or pan-sport, could help address the pertinent integrity issues and challenges faced today. This could be a role similar to that played by WADA in the anti-doping arena. 📛 The current landscape is sub-optimal. There are clear conflicts of interest, significant cultural obstacles and an all-too-common unwillingness to address problems. There is also room for improvement in efficiency and transparency. ⚽🏏🎾 Different sports and governing bodies approach different integrity issues in different ways. Consistency is lacking. 👟 Athletes and participants should be keen on the idea: ultimately it is about protecting them, as well as the fans, sponsors and businesses engaged in sport. Trust is paramount. 📑 At the very least, there should be a review that identifies the key issues and how best to address them. 💬 Quote of the day: "Everything seems difficult until it is done".
