Really interesting piece and lovely link made between the need to be innovative now more than ever with the evidence base present in educational literature. I interpret much of this article as a clear case for education and scholarship staff to be given space and time to innovate and disseminate their practice. Scholarship, both of learning and teaching, and of professional practice more broadly is essential to developing curricula fit for the 21st century.
New on Wonkhe with my Nottingham Trent University colleague Bunmi Omorotionmwan, PhD - to create inclusive, engaging university education, we need to innovate. That means building trust and providing #Scholarship evidence in conversations between academic and quality assurance colleagues. https://lnkd.in/eUg9KfSm
Are innovation and quality assurance compatible?

Noel Entwistle, of The University of Edinburgh's University of Edinburgh Moray House School of Education and Sport unveils key educational strategies in his latest blog post examining the impact of 'deep' versus 'surface' learning approaches on student understanding and engagement. Through the lens of the broad-reaching Enhancing Teaching-Learning Environments (ETL) project, Prof Entwistle explores how distinct teaching environments influence students' study habits and academic success. "Students adopting a deep approach engage in learning to understand material for themselves, which contrasts sharply with those who use surface learning just to recite facts without understanding. This crucial distinction informs our teaching methods and curriculum design, aiming to foster a richer, more engaging learning experience." By integrating findings from educational research into daily teaching practices, educators can enrich classroom experiences and stimulate a more profound engagement and comprehension amongst students, encouraging them to seek understanding rather than rote memorization. Explore more on how these educational insights are shaping modern teaching strategies and enhancing student learning outcomes. Read more at link in comments below.

Academic and business owner Transformanal Leadership, Career and Academic Coach (PhD and EdD candidates), and Consultant
I'm excited to share a joint paper with Dr Ifeoma Dan-Ogosi, PGCE, SFHEA "Unlocking Potential: The Transformative Power of Coaching for Doctoral Students," published in the May 2024 edition of Research In Teacher Education (Volume 14, No. 1). This work explores how coaching can significantly enhance the doctoral journey, offering new insights into student support and development outside the student-supervisor relationship. Doctoral students would benefit from a coach who is not part of the supervisory team and who can provide an unbiased perspective. This neutrality helps students feel more comfortable discussing issues and challenges without fear of judgment or repercussions. Coaches can offer objective feedback and guidance, helping students to navigate academic and personal challenges more effectively. The full article is available online, and it is fully open-access. I invite you to read and share your thoughts! https://lnkd.in/eQ6dVSfB #HigherEducation #DoctoralStudies #Coaching #AcademicResearch #StudentSupport #OpenAccess #ResearchInEducation #TransformativeLearning #EdTech #PhDLife

This article by Afifah Darke shines a light on the importance of knowing the students we are speaking to, and taking the time to understand their needs, particularly around human connection on campus. For Harrison Chong, "I wanted a school that has good school pride, where people are close-knit. Not every school has that feeling of interconnectedness as UPenn does.” Hope you enjoy the article:
