As hundreds of thousands of migrant children have crossed the southern border without their parents since 2021, growing numbers have ended up in dangerous, illegal jobs in every state. Shockingly, this includes factories, slaughterhouses, and industrial dairy farms across the country. The New York Times has reported on this heartbreaking reality in a series of articles. Many major U.S. companies, including some of the country’s biggest consumer brands, are taking steps to eliminate child labor in their domestic supply chains. This comes amid revelations that children are working throughout American manufacturing and food production. I, personally, am inspired to see companies taking action to address child labor and prioritize the well-being of children. This week in my labor studies course, I assigned the documentary "We the Workers." Made in 2017, the film offers a gripping account of the struggles faced by labor organizers in China as they organize against the repressive tactics deployed by the state and employers. I like the film not only because it draws attention to the other side of China's economic miracle, the robust labor agitations fighting for a greater share of the gains, but also because of its gritty portrayal of how workers make sense of these changes, press for their interests, and often fail in the process. In an era of revived nationalist rivalries between the U.S. and China, the documentary gestures to an international solidarity that seems both out of place, and yet absolutely necessary. Similar to Chinese workers, the American labor movement was also decimated by the cozy relationship between state authorities and capital. Whether labor can recover in either context remains uncertain, but even under such dire conditions, the film reminds its viewers that a group of agitated workers will always be a thorn on the side of employers.
