France’s Naval Group to build 4 Barracuda-class #submarines for Dutch military, to replace their three aging Walrus-class boats. A precise cost for the submarines was not provided, but the Ministry of Defense told parliamentarians in a letter that the "investment budget" is $6.1 billion. The Dutch subs will carry US-made Tomahawk missiles. The first two boats should be operational between 2034 and 2037, with their Tomahawks providing a "niche capability within NATO and the EU." | https://bit.ly/491s64x ⚓ #submersibles #silentservice #defensecontractors #defenseindustry #nationalsecurity

The alternative scenario - the discussion in Romania about the donation of a Romanian Patriot system to Ukraine would have unfolded differently, given the strategic importance of Romania's military assets, if the Romanian Army had: a. Air forces - 4 HSAM units. b. Land forces - 3 HSAM units c. Naval forces - 4 multi-role corvettes with anti-air warfare (AAW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platforms. d. NATO Black Sea AEW&C aircraft - Wedgetail Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS.

Great catch by Isaac "Ike" Harris here. We see Iran using these militias for horizontal escalation to tie down US forces and sap our bandwidth. China already verges on complicity with this Barbary Pirates 3.0 activity. Plus, it has huge incentives to do nothing as its Axis of Revision partners conduct these malign activities that drain scarce US missile stockpiles. This Houthi activity is likely to continue even after the Gaza Conflict wanes because the group will have enormous incentive to impose six-figure "tolls" on shipping that are cheaper than passage around South Africa but still lucrative for their operations. It will be almost impossible for them to relinquish the power they've tasted from their operations thus far. I agree with Ike that "non state actors + advanced anti-ship weapons = several rough decades for maritime security and our Navy." We need a lot more missiles, a lot faster, and a lot cheaper. WSJ: "How an Iranian-Backed Militia Ties Down U.S. Naval Forces in the Red Sea" It is a testament to the professionalism and skill of the U.S. Navy destroyer fleet and the defense industrial base that stories about successful anti-ship ballistic missile engagements are no longer big news. This article was on page 6 of the WSJ this morning. However, this success diminishes that fact that the world has crossed a threshold in warfare. Prior to the Houthis, there has been extremely limited sustained use of anti-ship cruise missiles in combat and no use of anti-ship ballistic missiles. The fact that it is coming from a non-state actor should give us all pause. As is the case in the Red Sea today, these weapons can effectively cut off seaborne commerce in a confined area. If they are to proliferate beyond Yemen, the world's Navies are in for a rough few decades. https://lnkd.in/gq5227fy U.S. Navy's newest air-to-air missile could tilt balance in South China Sea Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) military exercises at about 100 miles south of Oahu, Hawaii. The U.S. Navy's deployment of new extremely long-range air-to-air missiles in the Indo-Pacific could erase China's advantage in aerial reach, experts say, part of an intensifying focus on projecting power amid high tensions in the region. On September 14, 2024, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (#NORAD) detected Russian🇷🇺 Il-38 and Tu-142MK patrol aircraft operating within Alaska's Air Defense Identification Zone (#ADIZ) as part of Exercise #OCEAN2024. This joint exercise involves extensive Russian naval, aerial, and surface assets from the Baltic, North Sea, and Pacific Fleets, along with personnel from China's People's Liberation Army (#PLA)🇨🇳 in the Pacific region. NORAD reported that the Russian aircraft stayed in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace. The ADIZ is an area unilaterally declared by a country to monitor and control air traffic but is not legally defined by any international treaty. In addition, on September 13, Russian Tu-142MK anti-submarine aircraft and Su-30SM fighters were intercepted by German Eurofighters over the Baltic Sea. This incident is part of ongoing patterns of Russian and German military aircraft encounters in the region. Furthermore, Japanese Self-Defense Forces reported Russian patrol flights near southern Japan, including over the Ryukyu Islands, on September 12. These activities are linked to the broader Exercise OCEAN 2024 and highlight increasing long-range patrol operations by Russian and Chinese forces.

Russian Navy launches huge military exercise across multiple seas A large-scale naval exercise involving Russia’s Pacific Fleet, Baltic Fleet, North Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla kicked off today. Over 300 warships, vessels and submarines, as well as about 50 aircraft and helicopters, and around 20,000 sailors, are engaged in this massive military exercise. The primary goal of the exercise is to test all levels of the Russian Navy’s command and control capabilities. The exercises in question include anti-air drills, artillery drills involving air and naval targets, the deployment of countermeasures while evading a simulated enemy strike and anti-submarine warfare drills. During this exercise, Russian naval vessels along with coastal defense troops and aircraft of the Russian Naval Aviation are going to engage in over 300 battle drills, according to a press release by the Russian Ministry of Defense. This naval exercise is being held mere days after Russia celebrated its Navy Day.

NSPA's Growing Support to the Alliance NSPA’s Ammunition Support Partnership is a critical enabler to sustaining member nations’ support to Ukraine. NATO’s Secretary General recognized NSPA’s recent contracts for the purchase of around 220,000 155-millimeter artillery shells worth 1.2 billion US dollars. But NSPA is purchasing much more than just typical Army ordinance. In Dec 2023, NSPA awarded a contract on behalf of the Spanish Navy for the delivery of Naval Strike Missiles. NSPA most recently (Jan 2024) contributed to NATO’s air defense capabilities enhancement with the purchase of RBS 70 BOLIDE Missiles to be delivered in 2027. In Jan 2024, NSPA announced its support to a coalition of nations, including Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, with a contract for a combined quantity of up to 1,000 Patriot™ Guidance Enhanced Missiles (GEM-T), if all options are exercised.
